US Grade 8
Beginner Level
Unit Objectives In this introduction to linear equations for beginners, students will: Understand linear equations by defining them and identifying their components, such as the slope and y-intercept. Learn to solve one-variable linear equations using simple methods suitable for beginners. Graph linear equations on a coordinate plane to visualize relationships. Interpret the slope and intercept in real-world contexts to build foundational understanding. Students will participate using Edpuzzle. I have created and recorded a lesson for Edpuzzle. Within Edpuzzle, students are asked questions and can respond right within the program. I can then review their work, identify areas of need, and send out any new lessons, if needed. Each interactive video is followed up by a Google Form worksheet. This worksheet is not required, however, it is strongly recommended and will help me support your student even better! ⭐️ If you are brand new to Outschool, use my promo code GyZy7F4V at checkout and you will receive $20 off this class! ⭐️
Learning Goals
Understanding Linear Equations: Students will be able to define linear equations and identify their components (slope, y-intercept).
Graphing and Writing Linear Equations: Students will graph linear equations on a coordinate plane and be able to write a corresponding equation.

over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Back to Basics- Graphing Mini Lesson
Before we dive into linear equations, let's review graphing. Graphing can be difficult for struggling learners.
Interpret Graphs: Students will accurately interpret data presented in a graph, explaining trends and relationships.
Label Graphs: Students will properly label axes, titles, and legends in their graphs. Students will also plot and read ordered pairs.

Lesson 2:
Exploring Slope
Objective: Understand the concept of slope and how it affects the graph of a line.
Introduce slope as a rate of change with visual aids using a variety of methods. Calculate slope between given points.

Lesson 3:
Graphing and Writing Linear Equations
Objective: Graph linear equations using slope and y-intercept.
Activities:
Identify slope and intercept in various forms.
Demonstrate graphing using the slope-intercept form (y = mx + b).
Objective: Write linear equations from given graphs and word problems.
Activities:
Review graphing concepts.
Discuss how to derive equations from graphs.
2 assignments
Lesson 4:
Linear Equations Application
Objective: Present real-life applications of linear equations.
Activities:
Students select a real-world scenario to create a linear equation and graph.
Students identify slope and y-intercepts in real-life scenarios.

Learning Needs
My speciality is in specific learning disabilities. I go slow and repeat. I use colors to help with visual tracking.
Parental Guidance
Students will be required to log into Edpuzzle. Please have students use their names-- no one will see these but me!
For full courses, students will be asked to create a FREE log in if they haven't already.
Pre-Requisites
Basic operations with integers and rational numbers
Understanding of coordinates on a Cartesian plane
Familiarity with basic algebraic expressions
Familiarity with variables and constants.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in Special Education
I teach 8th grade math exclusively to students with learning disabilities. I primarily work in a small group setting but do support larger classes at times. I have worked in special education for 12 years and specifically math for the last 10.
