In this 8-week filmmaking course, students learn every step of making a movie from developing an idea to releasing the film. Taught by an award-winning filmmaker, this hands-on course covers each stage, from concept to distribution.

Week 7: Research distribution strategies and recommend one.Certificate of Completion

Beginner - Advanced Level
In this 8-week filmmaking course, students will embark on the exciting journey of turning a movie idea into reality. Each week, we’ll dive into a different stage of the filmmaking process, covering everything from developing an idea, assembling a crew, and shooting the film, to editing, marketing, and distribution. Students will learn practical skills and creative techniques, understanding the vital roles on a film set and how to navigate common filmmaking challenges. Through interactive lessons, real-world examples, and hands-on activities, students will explore both the theoretical and practical sides of filmmaking. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of how a film is made, with the knowledge to create their own films in the future. We’ll discuss filmmaking using clips from both my productions and other notable films to provide grounded insights into the process.

Introduction to Filmmaking & Stages of Production
Students will explore the five key stages of filmmaking: development, pre-production, production, post-production, and distribution. We will discuss how each stage plays a critical role in the process of turning an idea into a finished movie.

Navigating the Film Industry & Building Your Crew
This session focuses on understanding the film industry landscape today, including how to network, navigate challenges, and build a reliable team. Students will learn how to assemble their crew and the essential roles needed to make a film.

Lesson 3:
Creating the Million Dollar Idea & Story Development
Students will brainstorm ideas and develop one into a workable story. We’ll discuss how to create a compelling narrative that can be turned into a movie, focusing on concept creation, story structure, and character development.

Lesson 4:
From Idea to Pre-Production: Casting & Planning
In this week, students will learn how to move from story development to pre-production. We’ll cover how to cast the right actors, hire department heads, and plan for the logistics of a film shoot, preparing for a smooth production phase.

Some of the films we may discuss may contain themes like action or mild violence, but discussions will always be age-appropriate and sensitive to the group’s needs. The lessons and film examples used will also celebrate diverse perspectives and cultures.

I am an award-winning filmmaker with 17+ years of experience in directing, writing, and producing films across the globe. My career highlights include winning a Best Director award in New York in 2018, co-writing, directing, and producing a remake of Richard Linklater’s Tape, and creating the crime series Forensic Psychologist, which premiered in New York last Summer. I’ve produced projects in the UK, US, Hong Kong, Japan, and more, and my films have been covered by top trade publications such as Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter. I’ve also headed the international arm of Hong Kong’s oldest broadcaster, Asia Television (ATV). My aim is to share these real-world experiences with aspiring filmmakers, helping them navigate the creative and logistical aspects of filmmaking.
