In this ongoing course, students will engage in novel-based 6th grade curriculum focusing on reading comprehension, plot, characters, vocabulary, figurative language, and poetry.

Class experience

Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
Aligned with State-Specific Standards
*Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by practicing practicing reading comprehension strategies, viewing teacher modeling, and independent reading
*Students will expand their vocabulary by participating in group discussions, practicing context clue definitions, and defining words independently
*Students will learn figurative language (similes, metaphors, alliteration, end rhyme, etc.) by filling in graphic organizers and taking notes on stories we read
*Students will practice note-taking skills (highlighting, labeling, etc.) by participating in class discussions, reading and highlighting informational passages independently
*Students will determine differences between fiction and nonfiction by participating in discussions 
*Students will practice identifying plot events and studying characters by participating in class discussions and answering reading comprehension questions independently
*Students will look at symbols and themes in books/stories by participating in class discussions
I'm a certified English teacher and Reading Specialist with 15 years of teaching experience. I've taught 6th grade for four years and wrote curricula for multiple school districts and independently taught students. 
Homework Offered
Students will read independently, answer reading comprehension questions, define vocabulary words, view video lessons, fill out guided notes, and complete Blooket quizzes.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
*I will assess knowledge using Blooket quizzes. I will contact parents/guardians if students do not earn a 70% on quizzes. *Students will also get progress reports in December and May
Grades Offered

Teacher is a certified Reading Specialist and can make accommodations for all learners. Please reach out for more information :). 
Teacher will provide all vocabulary, informational passages, short stories, handouts, and reading comprehension questions. 

Students need to following books:
*Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
*Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit
*Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
*Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
*Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! by Laura Amy Schlitz

Students should come to class with

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone involves magic and wizards.
Tuck Everlasting mentions hanging 
Number the Stars takes place during WWII and includes Nazi occupation of Denmark. There is no mention of concentration camps. 
Among the Hidden does focus on population control.
