Class experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Here is a list of standards that students in this year-long ELA course for 6th and 7th grade will learn:

Reading Comprehension:
a. Analyze and interpret texts.
b. Identify main ideas, supporting details, and themes in a text.
c. Make inferences and draw conclusions based on textual evidence.
d. Analyze characters, settings, and plot development.
e. Determine the author's purpose and point of view.
f. Compare and contrast different texts and genres.

Fluency:
a. Read aloud with accuracy, appropriate pacing, and intonation.
b. Use context clues to decode unfamiliar words.
c. Read grade-level texts with increased speed and accuracy.
d. Use strategies to improve reading rate and expression.

Writing:
a. Write clear and coherent paragraphs and essays.
b. Develop a thesis statement and support it with evidence.
c. Organize ideas logically and use appropriate transitions.
d. Revise and edit writing for grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
e. Use different types of writing, such as narrative and persuasive

Grammar:
a. Understand and use correct context clues
b. Recognize prefix and suffix and meanings
c. Use punctuation marks accurately, including commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks.
d. Identify resources for study
e. Use capitalization and spelling correctly.
F. Understand connotation

Vocabulary:
a. Expand vocabulary through reading and direct instruction.
b. Determine the meaning of words using context clues.
C. Use vocabulary strategies to understand and learn new words.
d. Understand and use academic and domain-specific vocabulary.

Speaking and Listening:
a. Participate in group discussions, presentations, and debates.
b. Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding.
c. Use effective speaking and listening strategies, such as summarizing, paraphrasing, and clarifying.
d. Follow rules of etiquette and collaboration during discussions.

Critical Thinking and Analysis:
a. Analyze and evaluate arguments and claims in texts.
B. Make connections between different texts and real-world experiences.
C. Evaluate and analyze different perspectives on a given topic.

These are just some of the standards that will be covered in our year-long ELA course for 6th and 7th grade.

Ms Mumma is a highly experienced and dedicated educator.  With a Degree in Education, she has established a solid foundation of knowledge, enabling her to create a dynamic and enriching learning environment for her students to thrive.

Possessing a diverse background in education, she has mastered as extensive experience has honed her teaching expertise and equipped her with the ability to adapt and cater to the unique needs and learning styles of each individual student, fostering an inclusive and engaging classroom experience.

Homework Offered
Students will be offered homework practice for skills that they struggle with or need practice for. They will not need to turn it in, but will have the opportunity to review skills if needed. We will read through our 2 novel studies. Student will be assigned reading occasionally outside of the class. They will read no more than 1 chapter each assignment.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be informally assessed through observation and participation. Students will be assigned written reports that will count toward their writing portfolio. Letter grades will not be given in this class unless Students are full time for the term and then only at parents request.
Grades Offered
Students will need a digital or paper copy of 2 books for novel study. " The Giver", and " The Call of the Wild". They will also need a pencil and paper for writing assignments.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
In this class, we will use Google Classroom, google drive, kahoot, and canva ( the free version) 
Students will need a notebook and pencil, their computers, and 3 novels for the novel study to include;  "The Giver", " The call of the Wild" and " Farewell to Manzanar" these novels may be a digital copy or a paper copy.
