US Grade 5 - 6
This class will be a wonderful combination of fifth grade reading and grammar standards with tons of comprehension and writing skills. This class will be structured so your can join and leave at any time along the way- however this class tends to stay full with the same students each week. We will begin each day with our grammar skill and once a week play a game to help practice this skill. We will spend the rest of class learning and practicing a reading skill. We will learn how to answer questions by restating and finding our answer in the text. We will work on critical thinking skills and thinking about situations from different points of view. We will even have a few projects throughout the year where students can research and have a change to practice presenting a small project to the class. When we are reading a novel, there will be some reading outside of class occasionally. I think this will be a fun way to practice reading and grammar! Students will learn through lecture, videos, games, partner work and hands on activities. Student expectations: I expect all students to be respectful to everyone in class, wait their turn to talk, pay attention, work hard and have fun! I love taking time to talk to everyone before class begins, I often give them time to share something they did that weekend, or do a short would you rather to help build relationships in the class. We will often work in partners and small groups - I expect all students to work with their partners in a kind, helpful and encouraging way. We will meet in this class from late August- May Standards that will be taught this school year: Brainstorming Text evidence Comprehension Main Idea and supporting details Fact/opinion Figurative Language Theme Compare/Contrast Text Features Prediction Cause and Effect Sequencing Plot Author's claim Text evidence Inferences Explicit Quotes Context Clues Personification Poetry Grammar: Nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns ,prepositions & prepositional phrases, interjections, conjunctions, splices, fragments and run-ons; subjects and predicates; simple, compound and complex sentences; direct and indirect objects; improving sentences, Separating items in a series, semi-colons, colons, introductory elements, direct address and question tags

Students will use Nearpod in this class, Nearpod is a safe and COPPA approved site. Nearpod allows me to give students practice pages that I have made - while they work, I can see their work. This allows me to see if the class is understanding each topic and allows me to see any mistakes they are making.
Students will also use Blooket - to practice skills learned in class
We will use a variety of writing resources such as story jumper.
All sites will be private, allowing only the students and myself to see.

Indiana Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello! My name is Mrs. Neal! I am a licensed teacher in the state of Indiana. I have been teaching on Outschool for five years, teaching 3rd - 6th reading/LA and Math! I taught 3rd grade for 7 years, and loved every second of it! I always knew I had a passion for math, but becoming a teacher taught me that I also have a love and passion for reading and teaching kids to love reading! My goal is always to create a classroom where students feel valued, successful, wanted, and smart! I keep my classroom positive and expect kindness and respect from all students.
I am also a mother of three, two boys ages 18 and 7 and a girl age 14. I did step away from the classroom four years ago in order to stay home with my kids. We live in Indiana during the summer and go to Florida for the winter months - I love showing my students the ocean and allowing them to see what we have seen on our adventures during the week.
I am very excited to meet you and your student in class!
