US Grade 5
This course will cover the 5th Grade NGSS Science Standards in a hands-on and engaging way! Seed and Stem Learning Center believes that students learn science best through exploration, group work, and hands-on activities. Real-world problems, situations, and problem-based learning will drive student inquiry throughout this course. Students will have multiple opportunities to interact with other students and their instructors throughout this course in order to get the most out of their online experience. Students will be given one lesson a week that will involve instruction, demonstrations, and experiments. The rest of the week will provide students the opportunity to complete projects, interact with other classmates through platforms such as Outschool discussions, games, and complete online simulations. Students will receive a homework packet every week. This packet will have multiple activities and assignments to choose from including reading comprehension passages, videos, and corresponding questions, at-home labs and experiments, and traditional worksheets. Students can complete one option a week or choose to complete additional assignments. Students will have multiple performance assessments throughout the course in order to assess their understanding in addition to problem-based learning projects and experiments. The following topics will be covered during this course: Unit 5: Ecology Week 1: Types of Organisms Week 2: Food Chains and Webs Week 3: Nutrient Cycling Week 4: Biomes and Ecosystems Unit 6: Human Impact Week 5: Human Impact on the Environment Week 6: Types of Pollution Week 7: Human Impact on other Species Week 8: Solving Environmental Problems Unit 7: Earth's History Week 9: The Early Earth Week 10: History of Life on Earth Week 11: Fossils Week 12: Studying Earth's Past Unit 8: Earth's Systems Week 13: Earth's Systems Week 14: Earth's Hydrosphere Week 15: The Atmosphere Week 16: Clouds Due to the fact that this is a flexible course, students who are already taking 5th grade Science can enroll for additional support and practice. Homeschooled students can enroll for a complete 5th grade Science curriculum. Videos will be uploaded weekly along with practice assignments, homework, and additional resources. Students will use the Outschool classroom to access all materials and homework. The weekly schedule will include the following: Monday: Pre-Recorded video lesson with instruction of the concept. Students will be given an assignment to complete by the end of the week. Tuesday-Thursday: Students will work on their assignments on their own. They can message their instructor for additional assistance during this time. Friday: Students will turn in their assignment to be graded by the instructor. Students will participate in engaging and interactive platforms such as Kahoot, EdPuzzle and Quizziz in order for me to accurately assess.
