Class Experience

US Grade 5
Let's take a deep dive into Science during these Ongoing Science Lessons in Nonna's House. Each week will cover one of 34 different topics taken from the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) for Fifth Grade. Children must have completed a 4th grade level science course prior to taking this class. Topics are extensions of previous science learning from grades 2nd-4th.
!! PLEASE READ SYLLABUS FOR COURSE OUTLINE OF LESSONS !!

NGSS are standards developed by 26 states in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association, the National Research Council, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve. It was released in 2013 and utilizes three-dimensional learning (Crosscutting Concepts, Science & Engineering Practices, and Disciplinary Core Ideas.)

The following US states uses NGSS as their curriculum: WA, OR, NV, CA, NM, KS, IA, IL, MI, KY, MD, NJ, CT, RI, NYC, ME, NH, and VT
The following States Included NGSS into their current Curriculum: MD, ID, UT, AZ, MT, WY, CO, ND, SD, NE, OK, TX, MN, WI, MO, LA, IN, OH, TN, AL, GA, NY, PA, WV, VA, NC, and SC.
FL does not use NGSS.

Class will meet once a week for 60 minutes.
I believe that everyone learns their own way. To accommodate the different learning styles I will be generally following the 5E Science Lesson Plan which includes visual, auditory, and physical learning in each lesson**:

Science Session Breakdown (approx.):
Engage~ 5 min: Welcome and Inquiry
Explain & Elaborate~ 15 min: Topic Mini-Lesson & Notebook Work
Explore~ 30 min : Research and/or Activity
Evaluate~ 10 min: Wrap-up and Share, if time allows

Classes will run September- May. Some weeks will be skipped due to holidays and winter/spring break schedules so be aware of the dates for each class. Take a look at the syllabus to know where we are in the topic rotation.
Students are expected to be ON-TIME and PREPARED for every class as we will begin immediately so we can utilize all our hour for instruction/learning.

This is a Project-Based class. Students are required to come to each class session prepared with ALL supplies that are needed. Students who are not prepared may observe their classmates but they will be missing out on very important hands-on learning! PLEASE COME PREPARED.

PLEASE READ the Supply List before you register for this course. This will include all major items required before classes begin. Additional Handouts will be released the week before each class. A "Toolbox" of supplies (listed below in materials) is required EVERY week as well as handouts and experiment supplies.

~ Students will not be admitted beyond 5 minutes after class starts. The lesson will be in session and I will not have the opportunity to check the waiting room to admit students who are late. It is up to both the student and the parent to make sure you arrive to class on time. Refunds for missed classes will not be issued However, all classes are recorded so the student may watch at a later date to male up the class.

~~ ALL Students are REQUIRED to be on-screen during the entirety of the class. Students who refuse to keep their cameras on will be given a warning then placed in the waiting room once. If they continue to have their camera off they will be bumped from class and no refund given (exception possible for those with video issues on a case by case basis). This is for YOUR child's safety as well as my preference to be able to see and connect with each student. If you have completed the process for no video usage during class than I recommend that this class is not what you are looking for.
