I love math and I can’t wait to ignite a love of math for your learner this year! This class will become a math community throughout the year! We will encourage each other and cheer each other on as we discuss strategies to solve math problems. We will meet twice weekly to explore and learn fifth grade common core standards. I will begin most classes with a warm up to review previously learned topics! Then we will have a short mini lesson followed by examples. Students will then complete some problems on their own! The chat box, discussion, and interactive whiteboard will be utilized for students to share their problem solving strategies with me and the class. I will use visuals and manipulatives to help explain new concepts as needed. Games will also be used throughout the session to engage learners in the material! Following each live class meeting, homework will be given for students to complete the following day. The homework will include questions about the topic that was taught that day along with a couple other questions that review previously taught material. They will return their homework to me via outschool messages and I will respond to them with feedback to help them fix their mistakes and congratulate them on their hard work! I will communicate weekly with the parent so we can work together to help your child succeed! Week 1: Classify 2 dimensional shapes. Draw and classify quadrilaterals: trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombuses, squares, and rectangles. Find the area of squares and rectangles. Week 2: Finding the area of squares and rectangles with fractional edge lengths. Word problems. Week 3: Coordinate plane. Creating a coordinate plane. Naming and plotting points in the coordinate plane. Drawing lines and quadrilaterals in the coordinate plane. Area and perimeter in the coordinate plane. Week 4: Reading and interpreting line graphs. Week 5: Order of operations. Using parenthesis and brackets. Week 6: Write and interpret numerical expressions. Then solve using order of operations. Week 7 : Review Quarter 1 and quarter 2 material. Week 8: Review Quarter 3 and Quarter 4 material. End of year party!!!!!! An assessment will be sent this week to assess all content from all quarters. This is optional! I will touch base with the parent once per week to let them know how their child is doing with the topic being learned. I will also provide feedback on homework assignments that students submit to me. This class is capped at six learners to ensure a small group experience for your child! Topics each week may be adjusted depending on the learners needs. For example if students need more practice with fractions then we may spend an extra class on that topic. This is part 4 of a 4 part year long class! I am excited to meet your learner! Reach out if you have any questions about this class! I am happy to offer a 15 minute meet and greet session at no charge if you’d like to ask questions or get to know me! Just ask! This class must have at least four learners enrolled to carry on!

Hi!! I’m Mrs. Drye. I have a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from UNC Chapel Hill and a Masters Degree in Middle Grades Math Education from UNC-Charlotte. I was a NC Teaching Fellow and Teacher of the Year when I taught 6th grade math! As a teacher I focus on building relationships with students so that I can help them to build their math confidence. I focus on differentiating learning for each of my students. I can extend learning for some learners while helping others to review a topic that’s tough for them. I encourage students to share their math thinking and guide them in learning new strategies. I also keep class fun and exciting with games, discussion, and songs! I taught 5th and 6th grade for 8 years before deciding to stay home and homeschool my three girls. My daughters are now 10, 8, and almost 6! I enjoy exploring new places, teaching, and exercising!
