Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Do you have a 5th grader learning math at home? This can be a tricky age for math learning because the concepts become a little more challenging and the math begins to move from concrete to abstract. That is a lot to ask of brains that are still developing. That's why I love Saxon math - the lessons and practice activities spiral, so even the most challenging concepts are easy to understand and are broken down into manageable concept bites.

What is this class like?
As a self-paced class, this class contains a total of 30 lessons. When enrolled via Pay in Full, lessons are released "on-demand" such that learners can progress to the next lesson as soon as the one before it is marked complete. If paying weekly, learners will receive 5 lessons per week.

What are the lessons like?
At this age, our attention spans aren't super long and the lessons in this class are designed to align with that and no video lesson is longer than 15 minutes! Each lesson is also accompanied by a spiral review that covers not only content from that lesson but also reviews concepts from previous lessons and provides a review of concepts that are foundational for upcoming lessons.

What kind of teacher feedback will my learner receive?
Every lesson practice receives personalized feedback. I review completed lessons on a daily basis and learners should expect feedback to be received within 48 hours. I do use Loom to provide feedback, which alerts me when a video is viewed. This helps to ensure that learners receive, and view, the feedback provided to them.

Anything else that we should know?
This class is 100% digital, meaning that there is zero need for you to print anything! This makes the class a great option for those who prefer, or need, to take class on the go. That being said, I do recommend two things: First, a notebook to do the math. It is so important that some math is done in our heads, but other math needs to be done on paper. I'll let the kids know within the lesson which is best for the given concept. Second, neatness and organization can be a struggle at this age due to developmental milestones and the pre-adolescent brain changes going on. It is very likely that your kiddo might need support with organizing their on-paper math computations, their lessons, etc. My personal recommendation, as a mom and teacher, is to do weekly spot checks on those notebooks.

Learning Goals
