In this 15-week second semester FLEX class, students will exceed state standards as they work through the second half of the level 5 comprehensive grammar and writing program. Not only will students gain competency in English grammar, but they will also have a blast doing it. This class is excellent for both native and non-native speakers. The content includes a United States history theme. This class is designed to support parents and students by introducing the material for the week and setting a pace for completing the course. If students need more support, I will have tutoring hours available each week. Learners MUST purchase the books for this course (see links below). The first ten lessons will be provided electronically so that we can get started with learning as some learners wait for their textbooks to arrive.

English Grammar:
This rigorous program focuses on English grammar, writing, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Many concepts in the second semester build on the first. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation rules are sprinkled throughout. The spiraling incremental lessons are designed with reintroduction of concepts and opportunities to review. By the end of this course, students should have an excellent grasp on most concepts. This curriculum is designed for 5th grade, but a new to English grammar 6th grader would do well in this class.

Writing:
Students will have weekly writing lessons, in which they will be given a great foundation for writing style and structure. They will learn how to produce strong interesting sentences, as well as paragraphs, and essays. They will also implement the different purposes for writing (narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive). You can expect students to write many paragraphs and two essays in the first semester. During the second semester, they will write four essays. Learners will have plenty of opportunities with spelling and mental processing through dictations (writing down sentences spoken orally). Finally, learners will keep a journal for writing for weekly journal topics provided in class.

Class Structure:
Each Monday learners will be sent the instruction video for the week. The instructional video will include dictation, where students will write as the teacher reads a few history or geography themed sentences. Then, through lecture and interactive presentation slides, the teacher will walk students through the new lesson material. To ensure that they are grasping the new concepts, students will be prompted to answer questions in weekly discussion posts. Each class will cover approximately four grammar lessons and one writing lesson for one week's worth of instruction. Also on Monday, the teacher will give a daily breakdown for homework assignments. There are five Kahoot tests which will be assigned throughout the semester.

After class, students will complete the coursework for the lessons covered during class. A recommended daily homework breakdown will be provided. Students can go back and re-watch the lessons throughout the week as needed. They are welcome to message the teacher throughout the week with any questions on assignments. The answer key is in the teacher guide for students or guardians to check their own work.

Learners will further interact through structured weekly discussion posts, check-ins, asking questions, taking interactive quizzes, completing assignments, receiving feedback on writing assignments, and exploring additional resources and videos provided. The teacher will check-in with each student weekly via Outschool messaging system. Learners are encouraged to ask questions through the messaging system.
