5th grade Common Core Math: Multi-Digit Multiplication
What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
By the end of 5th grade, students are commonly expected to be able to multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number (ex: 428 X 11) using standard algorithm (traditional multiplication). In this one time class, I will model how to solve 3 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems using standard algorithm, provide time for students to practice with me, and then give students time to solve a math riddle by solving equations on their own. I will also teach students some helpful tips along the way to aid them in becoming proficient in multiplying using standard algorithm. Students will be encouraged to engage in conversations and to ask me questions for guidance and clarification. Multiplying using standard algorithm is the "traditional" method that many of today's parents learned when they were children, however, most students today are not exposed to standard algorithm in school until 5th grade. Through my 10 years of experience with teaching common core math, I have witnessed that students who are experienced in common core math strategies often have a difficult time transitioning from previously learned methods for multiplication, such as the area model/box method, to the traditional standard algorithm. Therefore, I have gathered some of my greatest tips for students to use for successfully multiplying with standard algorithm. I look forward to having your child join me as I show them how fast and efficient standard algorithm can be! This class is intended for students that have already mastered basic addition and basic multiplication facts, and how to add with carrying over. Although I always encourage students to memorize math facts, your child may utilize their own multiplication table for this class if he or she feels the need to do so.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to multiply a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number (ex: 428 X 11) using standard algorithm (traditional multiplication). Students will be given several tips for success!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, everyone! My name is Sue Yang! I received my Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education from Toccoa Falls College, in the state of Georgia. I am certified and licensed to teach elementary grades and I have over 10 years of experience as a teacher in public schools, mainly in 4th grade and 5th grade.
My passions include helping students grow in their confidence to learn and to help children enjoy learning! You will find that many of my classes on Outschool will be focused on mastering common core math concepts. After 10 years of teaching common core math in public schools, I have heard numerous parent testimonies of frustration with common core math concepts. Therefore, one of my goals is also to relieve parents of the stress of reinforcing common core math concepts at home.
During the traditional school year, most of my Outschool classes will be focused on math and tutoring due to the high demand. During the summer breaks you'll find that my classes will be focused more on art and creative learning! I look forward to meeting and teaching your child!
