5Th and 6th Grade Math Remediation
Class experience
A lot of new information is introduced in 5th grade and then built upon in 6th grade. Students who struggle with number sense, basic facts, and general reasoning skills are overwhelmed in a typical math class because they are missing those skills. When I was a regular classroom teacher, I specialized in teaching students with various learning delays and disabilities. This class is interactive and hands-on to facilitate working with multiple parts of the brain in order to solidify learning....
8 lessons//2 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Number SenseExploring the relationship between addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through the use of counters.Lesson 2Multiplication and DivisionStudents will explore the relationship between multiplication and division by thinking about fact families. We will also explore remainders by thinking in terms of parts of a group (fractions). This class will use counters.Lesson 3Distributive PropertyStudents will explore area and it's relationship to multiplication in order to understand the distributive property of multiplication. This is an important aspect of factoring which students will learn in higher level math classes.Lesson 4Multiplication Thinking to DivideStudents will solve division equations in terms of multiplication. Thinking of fact families and number relationships will be emphasized. Please note: I do not use the standard algorithm for division due to the many mistakes students make when using it.Week 2Lesson 5Solving Word ProblemsStudents will practice their multiplication and division skills in the context of complex word problems that involve multiple steps. Bar Diagrams will be utilized to help make sense of the problems.Lesson 6Multiplying Larger NumbersThis lesson will expand from 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication into larger multiplication by emphasizing the distributive property.Lesson 7Division of Larger NumbersThis lesson will extend from the previous three lessons to develop a systematic way of dividing large numbers. This will help prepare students for dividing with decimals.Lesson 8Solving Word ProblemsStudents will practice their multiplication and division skills in the context of word problems.
I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here! Instead my classes focus on being: *Student Centered- they lead the pace *Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply *Problem...
