Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
A lot of new information is introduced in 5th grade and then built upon in 6th grade. Students who struggle with number sense, basic facts, and general reasoning skills are overwhelmed in a typical math class because they are missing those skills.
When I was a regular classroom teacher, I specialized in teaching students with various learning delays and disabilities.
This class is interactive and hands-on to facilitate working with multiple parts of the brain in order to solidify learning. Students will be expected to have cameras and microphones ready and on during class to facilitate math conversation.

Each class will focus on a basic skill that fifth and sixth-grade math builds on, mental math skills, and reasoning skills.
There will also be hands-on activities to accompany each lesson, and it is highly recommended that students have access to a printer for this class. We will be using digital manipulatives such as base ten blocks or counters to facilitate hands on learning. Students are welcome to bring their own base 10 blocks or counters to class if they already have them.

This is a student-centered course: which means we may spend extra time on certain topics or skip through those already mastered.

Below are a list of possible topics that will be covered in this class. Topics will be based on student need as demonstrated through an informal pretest given on the first day.
*Building Number Sense (The Four Operations)
* Multiplication and Division Skill Practice (Fact Families, Zeros, Writing Remainders as Fractions, and Problem-Solving
* Using the Distributive Property to Multiply
* Using Multiplication to Solve Division Problems
*Solving Word Problems (2-digit numbers and multi-step problems)
* Multiplying Larger Numbers Using the Distributive Property
* Division of Larger Numbers
* Solving Word Problems
*Solving word problems involving fractions

Please note there will be a heavy emphasis on number relationships and the distributive property because those are skills that are essential for success in later years.
Disclaimer: I cannot guarantee results; however, if your learner follows along with the activities and participates actively, they will learn something:)

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
