Reading Jedi is modeled after a challenge I created for my 1st grade public school students during the 2021-2022 school year. It was inspired by my own homeschool kid's love of the Childhood of Famous Americans book series. I read the book Children Who Changed the World by David Butler and was inspired to add additional depth to comparative study of the historical figures Disney, Einstein, Ford and Edison.

Time Estimation Outside of Class: 2-4 hours per week Week 1: -Read 1/2 of Childhood of Famous American book of your choice (Disney, Einstein, Ford, Edison). -Journal notes. Week 2: -Read remainder of book of your choice. -Prepare presentation (summary) to present to the class. Week 3: -Read Children Who Changed the World book Introduction Chapter and Chapter about the person of your choice (Disney, Einstein, Ford, Edison) -Journal notes Week 4: Read Children Who Changed the World book Observation Chapter -Journal notes -Post on Padlet summary and observation about person of your choice -Comment on one other student's Padlet post2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

*Parent Note* The Children Who Changed the World book is written at an upper elementary school/lower middle school level independent reading level. The chapters are shorter, but students may benefit from reading with a parent. The Childhood of Famous American book series are appropriate for a 3rd grade independent reading level and average around 100-190 pages in length. Books in this series range in price from $4.99 to $7.99 each and can be found on the publisher’s website www.simonandschuster.com, Amazon, or various online used-book websites. *The historical nature of the biographies from the Childhood of Famous Americans chapter book series may discuss true historical facts covered in an age appropriate way. Some topics include war, illness, death of a family member, hunting of animals, prejudices and different historical beliefs about women, men and racial background. Parents are encouraged to make an informed choice about the choice of books for their child and share in discussion with their child as sensitive topics are brought up in context to the life of the historical person studied.
