In this class, students will gain the skills that they need to excel at academic essay writing. They'll learn how to structure the three most commonly assigned 5-paragraph essay types: opinion (which often has elements of the persuasive essay type), compare-and-contrast, and literary analysis. I'm an American Writers & Artists Institute trained copywriter and editor with professional freelance experience in writing website and sales copy, articles, and blogs, as well as editing, copyediting, and proofreading works of non-fiction and fiction. I'm also currently enrolled in a Master's in Publishing degree program. Here on Outschool, I've been teaching and tutoring in spelling, grammar, and writing for over three years. I'm currently writing my first non-fiction book about essay writing.
Homework Offered
After each class, students will be assigned either outlines or essays to complete, depending on the step that they're working on. This will require 30-60 minutes of work outside of class each week.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be encouraged to post their essays privately in the classroom so that I can ensure that they're structuring their essays correctly and using proper punctuation and formatting. I'll provide direct, individualized feedback on their writing and help them make edits to improve their work.Grades Offered
Learners will need the following materials during class: pen and paper (or a notebook) sticky notes a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.) installed on the device they're using access to Google or another search engine for research, dictionary, thesaurus, etc. Students will be provided with handouts containing blank graphic organizers, lists of transition words and phrases, and articles or excerpts for analysis.
