Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this small group PSAT Math course, students will study the most common topics on the test. In advance, they will be directed to complete the free, official SAT Study Guide questions for the topics. In class, students can ask questions about any of the problems they completed. They will receive instruction on the topics and be given an opportunity to complete more questions during class. During each class, strategies will be given about identifying key information in the questions, eliminating wrong answers, avoiding common mistakes, and time saving approaches.

Most students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in mathematics, but they do not always recognize the problem when it is presented a different way—like on the SAT or PSAT. I have grouped similar problems together so that students can learn to recognize when to apply the same strategies. They will learn the different ways that the same questions will be asked. With practical explanations and practice, students will recognize keywords and concepts, so they know what to pull out of their arsenal to attack each problem successfully. I want all my students to achieve on standardized testing. I am a passionate and energetic teacher who will utilize technology to take advantage of the online format.

Instruction will be given with the use of slides and peppered with student input. Students should expect to participate either audibly or through the chat, ask questions, and practice through Kahoot! They will be able to apply what they already know, and draw conclusions independantly. The goal is to leave class with a short list of strategies they have practiced and can confidently use in the future as well as review of important mathematical concepts.

Topics
Day 1: Linear Equations and Questions using Context
Day 2: Linear Inequalities and Linear Functions
Day 3: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities in Context
Day 4: The Relationships Among Linear Equations, Lines in the Coordinate Plane, and the Contexts They Describe
Day 5: Ratio, Proportion, Units, and Percentage

Learning Goals

Students will gain confidence in their preparation for the PSAT or SAT. They will practice the very skills they need to reach their goals. The SAT style questions will become familiar and less overwhelming.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Kahoot will be used to give students practice. It provides feedback for both the students and me. It does not require an account and students can use their first name or a nickname which they should provide for me. The Kahoot will include multiple-choice style SAT type questions which they will answer on their device.
Supply List
Please bring your calculator to class. This should be the one you plan to use on the SAT. Also, have paper and a pencil/pen to work out problems.

I have been teaching since I began tutoring children when I was in high school. My strength is in the “explaining.” I am a certified math teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience in public, private, and homeschool settings, as well as one-on-one tutoring. I have a BS in Mathematics Education and a MS in Educational Technology and Online Learning. I have six years experience teaching math online. Many students have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in mathematics, but they need help recognizing when to use each skill. My goal is to give students strategies to help them identify the type of skill they need to successfully complete unique problems. I want to see them smile when they realize they “got it.”My husband has stuck by my side for 30 years and we have three wonderful adult children. I love students and teaching and look forward to meeting your child.
