4th Grade Phonics-Based Spelling With Weekly Lists and Tests CEFR B2 -Ongoing

Weekly spelling class for fourth-grade level spellers focusing on phonemic awareness. Learners have the opportunity to master the spellings of up to 25 new words each week using multi-syllable word attack skills and spelling rules.

Homework
1 hour per week. Homework is assigned at the end of the first and second class meetings to practice spelling the word list. Worksheets will need to be printed.
Assessment
A spelling test video is provided for students to measure their progress.

🌟   Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind but is appropriate for all learners.

The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the Science of Reading.

🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. This class only meets once a week but I supply worksheets, digital games, supplemental videos for extended instruction, and a pre-recorded spelling test.

📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 25 words at the beginning of each week. During the live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. 

🚧 Keep in mind that the spelling rules only apply to about 70% of English words. We will discuss the spelling rules as they apply but focus heavily on spelling patterns, the sounds in the words, and study skills to master the words' spelling.

📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss the proper usage of the vocabulary.  

📝 One of the weekly assignments is to use their spelling words in sentences. Students may share their creative sentences on the classroom page or in a message to the teacher for feedback.

📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter.

📝 Homework assignments will be given. A worksheet packet is provided after the class meeting. The weekly spelling list will be sent out on the morning of the live meeting at 6 am Central time.

📝 Students can take a low-pressure spelling test with a pre-recorded video to assess their progress.

Week of July 8th: Focus on the sound /ow/ like in, “ground, however, and bounce”
Week of July 15: Words with the sound /er/ like in certain, nourish, piranha

Week of July 29: Words with the special ending pronounced /shun/ spelled with -ssion, and -tion, like in situation, discussion, expression, and question
August 5: Words with Long E endings like, “jealousy, journey, and prairie”
August 12: Words with the sound /oo/ like in nutrient, and Long U, like in utensil
August 19: Words with Long A spellings: -eigh, -ei, -ai, -ay (freight, reins, trains, and display)
August 26: Irregular plurals like “criteria, antennae, species, loaves”
September 2: Long E with seven different spellings (medium, machine, cream)
September 9: Long O with six different spellings (thrown, yolk, groan)
September 16: Silent letters (wreck, glisten, aisle, condemn, comb)
September 23: Endings with -ion (union, situation, version, expression)
September 30: Endings with -le or -al
October 7: Words with ‘er’ endings (lobster, announcer, employer)
October 14: Words with -en or -on endings (pardon, driven, written, falcon)
October 21: Words with 'qu' (aquarium, quotation, quantity)
October 28: Words with 'ph' (emphasize, symphony, pharmacy)
November 4: Words with the sound /er/ like in rehearse, surrender, and currency
November 11: Words with the special ending /cher/ spelled with -ture (moisture, miniature, feature)
November 18: Words with the special ending pronounced /shus/ spelled with -cious, -tious, -scious

December 2: Greek roots -bio, -dia, -auto, -baro, -para, -peri (biography, dialogue, automotive, barometric)
December 9: Multi-syllable management with frequently misspelled words and special endings (ferocious, awkward, astounding)

Supply List
Learners should be prepared to attend class with paper to write on, a pencil, and a set of at least three different colors of colored pencils or fine-tipped markers. Students will need lined writing paper for their optional spelling test delivered through the pre-recorded video.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
