Class Experience

This class goes over basic standards based math concepts for 4th grade. This class is ideal for 4th grade students who need extra reinforcement and practice but could also be for 5th grade students who might be struggling and need to strengthen their 4th grade mathematical concept foundation. It could also be for a 3rd grade student who is looking to get ahead for next year. I use the method of I-We-You where I first show how to do a problem, we do the next problem together, then they try it out independently. This flow of teaching and learning is responsive to the students and what they feel comfortable and confident with.

Topics to be covered in this order:
How does place value represent the value of the numbers?
Week 1 (January 3-9): Place Value
Week 2 (January 10-16): Comparing Numbers
Week 3 (January 17-23): Order Numbers
Week 4 (January 24-30): Using Place Value to Round

What strategies can I use to solve for the unknown?
Week 5 (January 31-February 6) : Using the Commutative, Associative, and Identity Property
Week 6 (February 7-13): Tricks to Adding and Subtracting Mentally
Week 7 (February 14-20): Estimating Sums and Differences
Week 8 (February 21-27): Adding and Subtracting up to 6 Digits with the Use of Carrying and Borrowing
Week 9 (February 28-March 6): Solving Multi-Step Word Problems Using Addition and Subtraction

How are Multiplication and Division Related?
Week 10 (March 7-13): How Are Multiplication the Same and Different?

The following weeks will be dependent on the learners' needs.
My presentations will be simple. I do not want technology to interfere with the students' learning. I will share my screen with problems and I will use my white board and markers to demonstrate. Students will only be required to use a white board or paper and pencil to work out their problems. Students will share their answers with me by showing and explaining what they have done or where they got stuck. We work together as a team so if a child is stuck they need to let me know so I can clarify. I will pace the class according to what I am noticing from the students.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Melissa Snyder and I am so happy to be teaching through Outschool! I have over 20 years experience teaching at the elementary school level. I have been a teacher's assistant, an interventionist, an integrated arts teacher teaching a social/emotional class to kindergarten through 5th grade as well as teaching 1st, 4th and 5th grade. I love helping students who are stuck in math, learning to love reading, and breaking down writing so it is not so overwhelming. I am inspired by students who are willing to learn and try new things and I am constantly developing lessons as I teach my own 5 year old and 9 year old at home. I love developing my own curriculum as much as teaching students, so much so, I went back to school and earned my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in Reading and Writing. Fun fact about me, sometimes I am just as silly as the kids I teach :-)
