This class is interactive, where I will break concepts down and check for understanding throughout the class. I scaffold and adjust my pacing to suit the needs of the students. I will use visuals, mnemonics, real-world examples, discussion, guided notes, and games to ensure a deep understanding. Student participation is expected. I strive to make learning fun and instill confidence in the student. I use the “I do, We do, You do” model to encourage retention and build confidence. After...
Students will use the place value system to understand multi-digit whole numbers. Students will use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Students will use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. Students will generate and analyze patterns.
I will provide 5-10 example problems for homework after each class. This is voluntary and will be reviewed at the beginning of the next class. If a student is struggling, they can post their concerns on the classroom wall for more clarification. Homework should not take more than 15 minutes per assignment.
Students should have a math journal to keep their notes in and solve example problems. A small marker board and/or some sheet protectors, along with some dry erase markers would be beneficial for class participation, but is not required. A printer would also be beneficial for notes, but is not required. No textbooks or subscriptions are required.
I will assess students in class based on their participation and homework (if they do their homework). Students will also have occasional quizzes. I can also provide a progress report at the end of the course. Please let me know if you would like a letter grade for this class.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
