Class experience

US Grade 4
I am a Georgia-certified teacher who taught in the public school system for a few years. Before teaching, I was a substitute teacher, paraprofessional, and elementary and middle school tutor. I learned how to take standards and build around them the curriculum needed for each group of students, since everyone learns differently. I believe in student-led learning and hands-on activity throughout education.
Homework Offered
I will post a Week Work packet every week. Although it is optional, completing the packet will help students to practice the concepts they learned in class. These packets do not need to be turned in, but instead I will post the answer key for students to check for their own mistakes.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Each week, there will be a graded project or graded choice board. Learners will have several options of what to complete for a grade. They will complete these projects outside of class and turn them in for a grade when they are finished. Graded work will be required for all students unless the parent has requested to opt out of graded assignments. I will also occasionally do quick, in-class assessments to check for mastery during a lesson.
Grades Offered
All grades given throughout the year will be compiled into a progress report in December and a report card in May. These will go to all students automatically, but parents may request a progress report of all grades at any point in the year. I will give grades in a percentage from 0-100% and this will allow parents and learners to see how they are progressing towards mastery in each subject area.
Students will only need something to write on and something to write with for class. They will need access to a printer to complete the graded work and week work. Additionally, there are optional projects and activities that may require other materials, such as craft supplies or common household objects. These will always be optional if learners do not have access to such things!
During our U.S. history lessons, we will cover the stories of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Frederick Douglass. Their life stories are rooted in slavery and can be upsetting. I will cover the major events and present in a manner that is age-appropriate, while directing students to research with their parent if they want to learn more. We will not sugar-coat the truth, but instead offer many different perspectives for students to have an appropriate understanding for their grade.

Additionally, we will be covering the American Revolution and Westward Expansion, which will include talks of revolution and war. Again, this material will be presented at an age-appropriate level and students will be directed to learn more with a parent if they so choose.
For math, we will cover all of the Common Core math standards, which are national US math standards that most US states have adopted.
For english language arts, we will also cover the Common Core ELA standards.
For science, we will cover all the Next Generation Science Standards, which are national US science standards most US states have adopted.
For history, we will learn about major events through close studies of historical figures in both US history and world history.
For economics, civics, and geography, we will cover the economic, civics, and geography standards from the Georgia Department of Education. Geography will be expanded to cover all of North America instead of just the United States.
I have also added in a few review lessons of previous standards to help students who may have learning gaps.

The websites National Geographic for Kids, Britannica for Kids, Education.com, and The Smithsonian Learning Lab will be used to help supplement and give articles to analyze.
