Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is for students who have finished Algebra I and are looking for a basic Geometry course. It is a Flexible class, meaning their are NO live meetings. Work is done independently with group interactions though the classroom. Each week will include othree learning modules. It will include 3 instructional videos, a three Kahoots, and a practice component or class discussion question.

In this class, you will receive instruction from an experienced, certified teacher. I have taught high school geometry in-person for over ten years and online for the last six. All teachers have different strengths, and mine is in the "explaining." I believe strong explanations help students understand the concepts.

Student learning will be enhanced through group interaction and opportunities to use higher-level thinking skills. They will create their own geometry questions about the weekly topic, complete with viable multiple-choice style answers. Coming up with viable answers allows students to think through the possible common mistakes and identify the correct answers. These questions will be added for the class. Discussion questions will be posted for each student to give input on various methods they can employ for finding answers. Geometry questions often have various ways of finding the solution. This is an excellent way to learn from each other in a nonthreatening setting.

Students will also have opportunities to apply the concepts they are learning and receive immediate feedback through Kahoot Challenges. When a student answers a question, they will immediately know if they are right or wrong and then they will have another opportunity to answer a question on the same concept. In addition to discussion posts, a video lesson will be posted on the topic, a practice sheet or quiz will be provided, and a Kahoot Code will be given. In this way, students will have multiple ways of learning. All work will be graded. Here are the weekly topics:

Week 1: Introduction to Geometry Vocabulary and Lines, Angles and Special Pairs of Angles, Parallel Lines and Transversals
Week 2: Triangles and Quadrilaterals, Area and Perimeter, Pythagorean Theorem
Week 3: Circles and 3D Shapes, Surface Area, Volume
Week 4: Chords, Tangents, Secants, Arcs, Angles, and Lines

Learning Goals

Students will learn to use the vocabulary of Geometry and calculate angles, perimeter, area, volume, and surface area.

I have been teaching since I began tutoring children when I was in high school. My strength is in the “explaining.” I am a certified math teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience in public, private, and homeschool settings, as well as one-on-one tutoring. I have a BS in Mathematics Education and a MS in Educational Technology and Online Learning. I have six years experience teaching math online. Many students have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in mathematics, but they need help recognizing when to use each skill. My goal is to give students strategies to help them identify the type of skill they need to successfully complete unique problems. I want to see them smile when they realize they “got it.”My husband has stuck by my side for 30 years and we have three wonderful adult children. I love students and teaching and look forward to meeting your child.
