Class Experience

In this class Outschoolers will learn how to identify the two main types of characters in a a text and how to analyze characters based on four main components.  The class will follow the observe-participate-practice (I do- we do - you do) model.  Students will learn how they already analyze characters in their everyday lives and how they can transfer those skills to enhance their reading comprehension.  This evidence-based character analysis technique is a key skill needed to be successful on reading comprehension assessments in middle grades and beyond.  Students will interact with their coworkers to practice and determine their mastery of the analysis strategy.  We will also review several standardized test questions that require character analysis so Outschoolers can be familiar with various ways questions based on this standard/ strategy might be presented.

I am a teacher who loves children of all ages, who loves teaching, who loves learning, but who has really never enjoyed school.  I have taught in major inner-city schools, rural schools, and suburban schools.  I have taught English, math, science, social studies, humanities and career classes.  I have taught special, ESL, bilingual, general, advanced/honors, and gifted class.  I have a Master’s of Science in General and Special Education for Middle Grades and have spent my career teaching grades 6-9.  I have also taught ages 2-8 years old because I love the little ones.   I have a special knack for helping students struggling with various attention deficit disorders.  I love hiking, reading, science (especially astrology), traveling, and all things nature. I credit my eighteen years of teaching success to my love for making and learning from mistakes and my philosophy that you learn best when you're having fun!
