Description
Class Experience
NOTE: on my class page you will find social studies sections for grades 1, 2, 3 & 4-5. Ask about sibling and multi-class discounts! Each week in this class we will cover grade 3 social studies standards. This class will focus on social studies standards in the areas of geography, government, civics, basic history, identifying and labeling world oceans and continents, identifying and labeling the 50 states in the USA, meaning behind US national symbols and where they are located (ie: Statue...
I have taught elementary level social studies for 12 years, including one year on Outschool, and believe in hands-on learning to help with student retention of materials. I have coached other teachers on how to use best practices for teaching elementary aged student understand and retain the most information possible. Due to my art therapy and special education background, I utilize various hands-on activities (cutting, pasting, making maps, coloring) to keep learners engaged. Note: there will be no historically sensitive topics taught in this section. No Native American history (except as an "others thinker discussion), BLM / minority groups or other subjects where strong opinions would need to be discussed.
OVERALL MATERIALS for DAILY CLASS participation: 1. Construction Paper 2. Extra White Copy Paper is Handy 3. Pencils 4. Erasers 5. Crayons or Colored Pencils (markers are messy) 6. Glue Sticks (white glue is messy) 7. Scissors 8. Access to a printer: I will send out any topic specific handouts by the Sunday of the upcoming week. I tend to send 2-3 weeks at a time. 9. NOTE: theme related materials for special projects (ie: model magic, paint, etc) will be sent out ahead of time to give you enough time to gather them for class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
I use researched-based curriculum from study.com, generationgenius.com and brainpopjr.com / brainpop.com.
