Class Experience

Each week learners will be taught a skill within the third grade math curriculum. After the short lesson, we will play a game for practice. This is a fun way to review topics learners already know, or learn something new!

My teaching style is patient, encouraging, fun, and inclusive.

The first four weeks of class are outlined below.

Week of 2/1:
Rounding to the hundreds place.
Learners will learn a rhyme to remember the rules of rounding. We will then play a game for practice using playing cards.

Week of 2/8:
Multiplying single digit numbers by 10.
Learners will be taught how to multiply single digit numbers by 10. We will then play a game using playing cards to see who can get their frog to the log first!

Week of 2/15:
Comparing fractions
Learners will learn about comparison sentences and fractions. Then we will play a game comparing fractions using mechanic's wrenches (teacher only) as a visual.

Week of 2/22:
Word problems
Learn to find key words in word problems. Answer the questions to draw the mystery monster!

Prerequisite experience: Learners must have a basic knowledge of adding and subtracting.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! Before I was a virtual teacher, I was an elementary and middle school learning specialist. I have experience teaching math, language arts, and executive functioning K-8, and writing K-12. I received my Bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University, and my Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado.

My classes are based on needs I saw in the public school system. Phonics, fractions, and essay writing were just some of the many areas I was brought in to work with students in. I now strive to help fill those gaps for students in affordable small classes!

I believe that no two students learn in the same way. Adapting the way information is presented to students puts everyone on an even playing field. I also believe that learning should involve more than academic standards. In school, students learn how to socialize, regulate their emotions, deal with frustration, and are exposed to the real world problem solving. Curriculum should reflect these important skills.

*If your student has an IEP or 504 plan, please let me know before class if you wish for any accommodations to be put in place and I would be happy to do so!*

Teachers are people too! When I'm not teaching I am raising my children, gardening, playing with our two dogs and four goats or continuing my own education.
