In this course students will be taught a different multiplication or division strategy each week to create a strong foundation for solving multiplication and division word problems.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Multiplication With Repeated Addition
Students will use their knowledge of addition to begin multiplying.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Multiplication With Arrays
Students will use the factors in a multiplication equation to draw arrays and multiply with accuracy.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Multiplication With Base 10
Students will learn how to draw base 10 blocks to create a visual representation to help them multiply.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Multiplication With Equal Groups
Students will use the factors of a multiplication equation to draw equal groups and multiply with ease.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Multiplication With Expanded Form
Students will be able to expand a two digit number to multiply in a more simple way.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Division With Repeated Subtraction
Students will use their knowledge of subtraction to begin dividing.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Division With Arrays
Students will learn how to create an array from a division equation to divide with accuracy.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Division With Equal Groups
Students will use equal groups to solve division problems. This strategy provides students with a clear visual of how division works.
 Week 9
Lesson 9
Division With Fact Families
Students will combine their knowledge of multiplication and division to divide and multiply quickly and with accuracy.
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Introduction to Remainders in Division
Students will learn how to divide when the numbers in their division equation do not divide perfectly.
 Week 11
Lesson 11
The Associative and Commutative Properties of Multiplication
Students will learn how the associative and commutative properties of multiplication can help them when multiplying.
 Week 12
Lesson 12
The Distributive Property of Multiplication
Students will learn how the distributive property of multiplication can help them when multiplying.
 Week 13
Lesson 13
Reviewing the Properties of Multiplication
Students will revisit all three properties of multiplication and learn when to use each property.
  • Students will be able to understand and apply foundational multiplication and division strategies to solve multiplication and division word problems.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Homework
Frequency: 1-2 per week
Feedback: available upon request
Details: After each class, students will be provided with an optional worksheet for additional practice applying the skill learned in class for that week.
Students must bring a paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker to class. No calculators are allowed.
