Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Are you looking for a way to engage your child in reading through a fun book club? Come enter the wonderful world of beloved children's author Roald Dahl as we read and discover the magic of the Big Friendly Giant.

Join in this fun and interactive book club with the book, The BFG each week over the course of four weeks. As an experienced teacher and librarian, Dahl is one of my favorite authors as he weaves together a delightful story with menacing giants, a sweet little girl name Sophie, and one big friendly giant who is out to save her! this is one of my favorite books as it captures the reader with well-developed characters, a touch of magic, and a twist of fantasy! It also won the Newberry Medal and is a widely read and loved book for kids!

The class will meet 1 time each week for 4 weeks and is structured as a book club, packed with student interaction through guided teacher discussions, time for group/partner work in breakout forms, and various activities centered around reading and writing skills. We'll begin our first meeting by introducing learners, reading together the first chapters and engaging in class activities and discussions. We'll end our first class by assigning chapters to read before our next meeting. Your child will be responsible for reading those chapters (7 - 8 chapters each week) outside of class in order to be ready to participate in our next class! See reading schedule below:

Class meeting 1 - read together Chapter 1 and 2, introduction activities and discussion
      assigned reading: Chapters 3 - 9

Class meeting 2 - book club discussion/activities Chapters 3 -9
      assigned reading: Chapters 10 - 16

Class meeting 3 - book club discussion/activities Chapters 10 - 16
     assigned reading: Chapters 17 - 24

Class meeting 4 - book club discussion/activities Chapter 17 - 24, final wrap up and closing activity

For each remaining class, your child will come with his/her book and have read the assigned chapters. We'll work on a variety of reading skills such as connections, character development, reading responses, writing, and even some fun "hands-on" type activities involving drawing and creating! Your child will have many opportunities to speak, read, write, and interact with other learners during this book club. I will be varying activities and lessons to best meet the needs of all learners through visual, auditory, and even kinesthetic activities. If your child has a specific learning style or need, please let me know as I can make sure to include elements that would best suit your child.

After each class, I will provide a class challenge for learners. This is an optional activity that allows your child to continue his/her engagement with the text. I like to provide this to parents so that they may supplement their child's work should they want or need it. It is strictly an optional activity; however, if your child does complete it, they will be invited to submit it to me via Outschool and I will provide personal feedback on their work. They also will be given the option to share with other learners in the class.

If you are interested in this book club as a private section, please reach out to me. I can set the class as private which means it would be your child and friends/family you'd want to join in. There would be no other outside learners. There is no additional cost and can be a great way to form a learning co-op, neighborhood, or friend group book club! Also, if you have specific reading/writing standards or skills you would like your child to work on, please let me know as I can adjust and plan to best accommodate your needs!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe in sharing the joy of reading and love to help cultivate that in young readers. Reading is the foundation for all learning and I use my experience as a licensed PK -6 teacher, with a Master's in Reading, to develop reading skills during our book club. I have worked both in the classroom and the library setting and reading is truly a passion of mine.

My work as an elementary school librarian allows me to draw on a variety of literacy activities to help make a positive reading experience. I definitely have an animated and enthusiastic reading style to make the story engaging, upbeat, and a lot of fun to join in each week! Your child will be drawn into this classic tale that whisks him/her away into a fantasy world full of excitement and adventure! My goal for your child is to fall in love with this story and continue the reading journey with other Dahl books or those that bring a sense of wonderment!
