W will take a deep dive into the wonderful world of James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. Students will read a chapter per week ON THEIR OWN or with a family member. Then, we will come together as a class for book club each week to discuss a certain aspect of each chapter. Each week, Miss Michele will lead the discussion with questions, word games and comprehension activities (that are also a lot of fun!) The weeks are broken down by chapter and topic. June 3, Chapters 1-10: What's in a name? How do the names of the characters help tell the story? June 10, Chapters 11-20: How does using songs and poetry help to tell a story? June 17, Chapters 21-30: Magic, heroes and villains. June 24, Chapter 21-29: Courage and Friendship Please note that the book is different from the movie (hence students will need to read the book in order to participate fully in the class.) Also, we will not be reading this book in class. Students will be required to read their chapters on their own during the week and come to class prepared to discuss it. Hence, this is one of my rare classes that DOES require homework. This is a book club. Therefore, while I do encourage students to express their opinions and thoughts about what the author is trying to say, I will not tolerate hate speech or students being disrespectful to one another. We are here to encourage each other.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what it is like to be in a weekly book club. They will also learn character development and tools writers use to move the plot forward.
