Class Experience

Do you have an interest in 3D design and 3D printing? In this 5-week class, you will be taught about 3D design and 3D printing, and how it is used for creative design. You will become a master at 3D design and through a series of activities and projects, you will create your own 3D character!

Day 1: You will be introduced to the basics of 3D design and 3D printing and by the end, you will know how to optimize your designs to be printed. Then, using TinkerCAD, you will get comfortable building objects in 3D.

Day 2: You will be taught how to build your own art gallery in TinkerCAD, step-by-step. This includes building all the components and placing them in your 3D world! After you are done, we will do a virtual walkthrough of everyone's creations!

Day 3: You will learn the importance of planning 3D builds in 2D first and work through an activity to help you design your own character. Once your character is designed, you will design your final draft of it on Vectr, an online vector drawing software.

Day 4: First you’ll get a refresher on 3D designing for 3D printing and then you will take your character design from the last class and build it in 3D! This will teach you how to take your 2D plans and turn them into your 3D objects.

Day 5: You will be taught about different 3D design techniques used in history and you will build your character out of clay. After, you will use SculptGL, an online sculpting technology, to design your very own 3D alien.
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
We will use multiple online websites in this class. When using TinkerCAD and Vectr, students will be asked to use the companies account so they do not need their own. They will be asked to title their creations with their first name and last initial so they can find their projects later. SculptGL is another website that will be used and it does not need an account but students may choose to dowload their creations onto their computer in order to save their work.
Supply List
A computer or device that can run TinkerCAD. If you are unsure if your device can, please reach out and we can instruct you on how to test. Many tablets struggle to run TinkerCAD.
