30 Minute Weekly Contemporary Dance Class (Ages 5-8)

In this ongoing 30 minute contemporary dance class, students will begin to explore the creativity that surrounds contemporary dance. Learners will be led through a full body warm-up, stretch, improvisation exercises, and choreography.

Class Experience

Contemporary dance is a free- moving style of dance that nurtures the soul. Anything goes! In this 30 minute class, students are free to express themselves in a safe space. Students will be introduced to the basics of contemporary movement. The class will be led through a series of unique improvisation prompts that promote inner creativity and exploration. Students will also learn unique contemporary choreography. Correct body placement will be emphasized and students will be given individualized corrections. At the end of class, students will be given the opportunity to learn from their peers and watch one another perform the choreography. This not only promotes a good team spirit among the class, but helps with choreography retention and correction as well. 

There will be periodic check-ins throughout class where learners will be given the opportunity to discuss how certain exercises felt on their body. I believe that this is a crucial step in helping students improve their dancing abilities and retaining information. 

At the end of class, students will leave feeling refreshed and challenged. After class is over, students are encouraged to film themselves doing the choreography and send it to me via the classroom chat option. I will then send them back personalized corrections. While this is not mandatory, it can be a great way to receive individualized feedback! 

Our session will go as follows:
Week 1- Emphasis placed on connecting our emotions with our dance.
Week 2 - Emphasis placed on finding freedom of expression in improvisation.
Week 3 - Learning how proper body placement comes into play in stretching and choreography.
Week 4 - Understanding how to mix both smooth and sharp movements together to create more dynamic pictures.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class involves physical activities that require adequate space to move around freely, proper footwear, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Parental or Guardian supervision is recommended.
Supply List
Students should have a clear space to dance, free from any hazards. Students may wear soft dance shoes of their preference, or they may choose to go barefoot. Have a full bottle of water handy!

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am excited to bring dance and movement classes to Outschool. Currently, I still train in all styles of dance 10+ hours every week. I have 9 years of experience dancing and teaching children ages 3-19 years old. I look forward to sharing my passion for teaching and my love of the arts to everyone here on Outschool. 

I will be bringing jazz, jazz technique, flexibility, hip hop, jazz funk, contemporary, and improvisation classes to this platform. 

In my classes, I emphasize the importance of proper body alignment, technique, and dance fundamentals. I also pride myself in embracing each learners' personal style and unique way of movement. My classes allow for a safe place to express individuality while fostering a connection among learners, all while having fun.

I can't wait to connect with all of you and see you in the classroom.
