US Grade 2
This class will cover second grade reading curriculum based on common core standards. I am an experienced teacher with 10 years teaching experience. Over the past 6 years I have taught 2nd grade at my local public school, teaching all subject areas (reading, writing, math, phonics, science and social studies). I am excited to learn with your learner this summer! I believe in meeting learners at their current academic level and providing an encouraging learning environment to facilitate meaningful learning. Learners should come to class with paper and pencil or whiteboard. I encourage discussions and lots of interaction but also understand some learners prefer not to participate and enjoy listening to class discussions. Each session will include a mini-lesson, group practice and independent practice. The mini lesson will include the new teaching point, which the teacher will demonstrate using interactive slides and/or Jamboard. This is an ongoing class so join anytime as new concepts will not be dependent on previous classes. Reading topics taught will include comprehension, accuracy and fluency strategies through mini lessons below: Previewing and predicting Retelling Learning about characters Lessons learned from the book Scooping words and phrases Stop and Jot Strategies to figure out tricky words How to use more than one reading strategy at a time Week 1: June 6th Reading: Previewing and predicting Week 2: June. 13th Reading: Learning about characters and Retelling Week 3: June 20th Reading: Noticing how characters change and how to bring characters to life Week 4: June 27th Reading: Discovering lessons in our story and keeping the life lesson in mind Week 5: July 4 (No class July 4th) Reading: Read longer phrases by scooping words and keeping tabs on comprehension Week 6: July 11 Reading: Mark thinking while reading and solving tricky words Week 7: July 18 Reading: Use more than one reading strategy while reading and read common beginnings and endings in snap words Week 8: July 25 Reading: Being a flexible word solver and strategies to figure out brand new words
