2nd Grade Science Fusion: Earth Science (3 of 4)

Second grade Science is very interesting and fun for students! This semester class will include a mixture of S.T.E.M., Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. We will even learn about people and careers in Science! This class will provide hands-on activities, such as drawing, experiments, and other projects. 

There is an optional write-in student edition book of Science Fusion, that you may purchase for your child. In total, there are 14 weeks in this class. I have it divided into four parts to make it more affordable for families to pay as we go. There is a lot of material to cover, so there are three classes each week.
Part 1: 2nd Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - The Nature of Science & S.T.E.M. (Units 1 and 2 - 3 weeks)
Part 2: 2nd Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - Life Science (Units 3, 4, and 5 - 4 weeks)
Part 3: 2nd Grade Science Fusion: Semester Class - Earth Science (Units 6, 7, and 8 - 4 weeks)

Week 1: Unit 6

*Students may bring a special rock or their rock collection (if they have one) for show and tell.

- Vocabulary: earthquake, volcano, flood, weathering, erosion, drought

Class 2 - Natural Resources (pages 241-252)
- Vocabulary: natural resource, product
- *Activity - Make a natural resources chart. (pages 246-247)
- Learn the history of Seattle, Washington. (pages 248-249)
- *Activity - Write two ways you use water. (page 250)

Class 3 - How It's Made (pages 253-262)

Class 1 - All About Weather (pages 263-276)
- How does weather change?
- Vocabulary: weather, precipitation, temperature, wind
"Cumulonimbus" is very hard to pronounce!! Here's the way you can break it down into syllables: "kyoo-myuh-low-nim-buhs"
- *Activity - Practice using a thermometer to measure the temperature of the air. (page 271)
- *Activity - Write and draw to complete the clouds and weather chart. (page 274)

Class 2 - Weather Patterns (pages 277-288)

- *Activity - Complete the water cycle chart. (page 286)

Class 3 - The Four Seasons (pages 289-300)

- Sing the Four Seasons song.
- *Activity - Complete the "How Seasons Affect Living Things" chart on page 298.
- Learn about hurricane airplanes. (pages 299-300)


Week 3: * The students will need some supplies for a tornado experiment this week.
Supplies needed: 
- Glass jar with a lid (mason jar, pickle jar, jam jar, anything will work)
- Water
- Clear Dish Soap (or blue if you have it)
- Vinegar
- Blue Food Dye
Class 1 - Severe Weather (pages 301-305)
- Vocabulary: thunderstorm, tornado, hurricane, lightning

Week 4: (Unit 8) The Solar System 
Class 1- Planets and Stars (pages 315-321)
- Vocabulary: planet, solar system, orbit, star, constellation

*Students will need cotton swabs for this class.
