Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 5
This class is appropriate for hesitant students that need extra support and encouragement in creative writing, as well as for exuberant authors wanting to take their writing to the next level. With private classes, tailored to their individual needs, your student will have successful writing experiences, and have purpose for writing. Unleash the author inside your young writer and watch them grow.

In this ongoing, once a week class, students will receive private tutoring in writing and language arts skills based upon their needs. Parents will communicate the desired focus for our time together, and the ability level of their child, allowing me to meet the student right where they are at, and support them in their creative writing journey. Classes will be structured around the needs skills, and goals of each individual student with support, encouragement, and engaging experiences.

The goal of this class is to help students grow in both ability and confidence, and enjoy the process of writing. Writing is one of the most important tools your student will take with them throughout their lives. A lack of confidence in writing can create reluctance for young writers, and create a serious road block to creative writing. Developing strong writing skills will go a long way to helping your student succeed in many areas of their lives. Not only do I want your student to acquire new skills and techniques, but I also want them to find their own writing voice or style, increase their confidence, and learn to love writing, or at least appreciate it. Once your student has had a few positive experiences with successful writing opportunities, their confidence will skyrocket, and their writing resistance will melt away.

Weather your student needs help creating stronger sentences, connecting cohesive ideas, improving the flow of sentences, using consistent tenses, using varied sentence styles, adding details to their writing, finishing stories, coming up with creative starters, writing a letter, focusing on a single theme or topic, utilizing different forms of writing, or just learning to write a paragraph, we can work together to support their needs and get them writing in a supportive environment with thoughtful experiences. Sometimes just getting something started on paper can be the hardest part, so let’s brainstorm, get the creative juices flowing, and get excited about writing. We can also spend some time working on vocabulary or spelling patterns if that has been identified as an area of need to help increase your student’s writing abilities. Students this age have a very wide range of abilities when it comes to writing. No matter where your student is at in their writing ability, they can improve, increase their confidence, and learn to enjoy the process!

Once you reach out with your student’s creative writing needs, I will tailor our time together to assess your student and see how to best support them in their needs and goals. We will usually begin with discussion and brainstorming, and an engaging, age appropriate prompt to give your learner the opportunity to start writing. Sometimes our session will call for various activities like using graphic organizers for planning content or learning a new skill which will be linked in the classroom. Other times, I may share a story to set the tone for a particular skill or theme we are working on. Examining other stories is a great way to see how other authors utilize different skills and techniques, and can also serve as powerful inspiration for their own writing.
Your student will have the opportunity to write in each session and conference with me about their progress. I will provide guidance, tips, tools, and feedback with suggestions and corrections in each class, while offering ample support and encouragement for their efforts. We will work on different writing activities and experiences each week based upon your student’s needs, with the goals of confidence and success in mind.

I look forward to hearing from you and working together to bring out the best writing possible in your young author!
