1st Grade Math Review-Get Ready for 2nd Grade!

In this on-going class, students will practice first-grade math skills. Students will review skills to ensure mastery in preparation for second grade.

Class Experience

US Grade 1
In this interactive class, we will review and practice 1st-grade math skills to prepare us for 2nd-grade. 

We will practice mental math daily.  
We will have a brief lesson on 4-5 particular concepts daily.

Your child can speak, write, and review/learn math concepts during these lessons. I will help students feel confident in their math skills and teach mathematical strategies. I will support any areas of weakness and acknowledge areas of strength. Students will have plenty of opportunities to participate. 

I have over 20 years of experience teaching young learners. 
Students should know basic number sense and first-grade math concepts/strategies.

Week of May 1st- May5th: 
Adding and Subtracting Strategies: Make 10, then count on, Doubles Facts, Draw/Write a Number Sentence, Add or Subtract,  Fact Families
Place Value Numbers to 120

Week of May 8th-12th: 
Geometry- Identify and Describe 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional Shapes
Fractions- Equal Parts, Whole, 1/2 and 1/4
Telling Time- Analog and Digital, Vocabulary, Tell Time to Hour/Half-Hour, Time Story Problems, 
Measurement- Taller/Shorter, Longer/Shorter, Best Tool for Measuring

Week of May 15th-19th: 
Money- Identify Coins, Count Mixed Coins
Graphing and Data- Survey, Collect, Graph, and Analyze
Word Problems, Place Value, Greater Than/Less Than, Add three digits

Week of May 22nd-26th:
Greater than/Less than
Explore Numbers to 20: Tally Marks, Dots, Graphs, Estimate, Subitize, and Counting On or Back
Understanding 10, Add and Subtract to 20, Find the Missing Part, Word Problems to 20

******At the end of 4 weeks, this material will cycle. Your child can join in at any time.  

Please note:
*** These classes are 25 minutes but sometimes run longer with more students or may finish a few minutes early.
***This class will focus on a Review of 1st Grade Math skills.
*** Your child should have number sense up to 100 and basic first-grade math skills.
*** If you are unsure of your child's mathematical level, set up a private tutoring lesson where I can assess basic skills. Please request a time via email.

My name is Ms. Shannon, and I am so thrilled to be a teacher on Outschool. 
My Courses:
I offer various classes including, but not limited to:
First Grade Reading, Kindergarten Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Beginning Writing, and Private Tutoring. I also offer private reading assessments and tutoring 1:1. I can help you determine what level your child is reading on and help you create a plan for progress. If you don't see an active class available, feel free to reach out and request a time. 

My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.

My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to help them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated style to allow all learners an opportunity to participate.  I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
