Welcome, Parents! Our 1st Grade Jungle Tales & Language Arts class is an exciting journey into the world of Rudyard Kipling's 'Just So Stories.' These will be rewritten to 1st grade reading level. Through captivating narratives, your child will embark on a literary adventure, fostering essential reading, writing, and language skills. Meeting Schedule: February 5 - May 10, 2024 (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4 pm Eastern Time) with no classes over Spring Break Class Goals: • Explore the imaginative world of "Just So Stories" by Rudyard Kipling. • Develop foundational reading skills through engaging stories and activities. • Enhance writing skills through creative storytelling and language arts exercises. 🔖Week 1: Introduction to "Just So Stories" February 6 (Tuesday): Read "How the Camel Got His Hump." Discuss the story and identify key elements. February 8 (Thursday): Engage in a group activity where students create their own imaginary animal and share its "just so" story. 🔖Week 2: Exploring Animal Characters February 13 (Tuesday): Read "The Elephant's Child." Engage in a reading comprehension game show. February 15 (Thursday): Creative writing activity: Students create a short story about an adventure featuring an animal character. 🔖Week 3: Storytelling and Comprehension February 20 (Tuesday): Read "The Cat That Walked by Himself." Reading comprehension games and discussing the importance of storytelling. February 22 (Thursday): Comprehension activity: Ask students to share their favorite part of the story and why. 🔖Week 4: Imaginative Writing and Grammar Fun February 27 (Tuesday): Read "The Butterfly That Stamped." Discuss the imaginative elements in the story. February 29 (Thursday): Grammar activity: Introduce basic grammar concepts using sentences from the story. 🔖Week 5: Jungle Adventures and Descriptive Writing March 5 (Tuesday): Read "How the Leopard Got His Spots." Discuss descriptive language. March 7 (Thursday): Descriptive writing activity: Encourage students to describe an imaginary jungle scene using vivid language with prompting. 🔖Week 6: Interactive Language Arts Activities March 12 (Tuesday): Language arts games inspired by the animal characters in "The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo." for interactive discussions. Discuss the story and identify key elements. April 4 (Thursday): Creative writing activity: Students invent their own "Just So" story. 🔖Week 9: Imaginative Creation and Grammar Fun April 9 (Tuesday): Imaginative crafting: Students create their own jungle animal characters or scenes based on the stories. April 11 (Thursday): Grammar activity: Introduce basic grammar concepts using sentences from the stories. 🔖Week 10: Exploring Language Arts through Stories April 16 (Tuesday): Read "The Beginning of the Armadillos.” Discuss key elements. April 18 (Thursday): Language arts games to encourage spelling, vocabulary, and inference inspired by Tuesday’s story. 🔖Week 11: Creative Writing and Vocabulary Fun April 23 (Tuesday): Read "The Crab That Played with the Sea." Discuss the characters and their descriptions. April 25 (Thursday): Vocabulary activity: Introduce new words from the stories with fun exercises for practice. 🔖Week 12: Exploring Jungle Adventures April 30 (Tuesday): Read " How the Whale got his throat.” Discussion and reading comprehension games. May 2 (Thursday): Descriptive writing activity: Encourage students to describe an imaginary jungle scene with a focus on descriptive language. 🔖Week 13: Interactive Language Arts Games May 7 (Tuesday): Spelling and vocabulary games inspired by the "Just So Stories" we have read. May 9 (Thursday): Farewell celebration with fun language arts games and activities.
