Class Experience

US Grade 1
Does your learner like to solve fun mysteries? Well, let them put on their detective hat and get to work using their math skills! This Mini Math Mystery is a fun 'game-like' activity to practice and review the math skill, addition and subtraction with sums to 20. Learners will follow a simple elimination structure where they will be using the answers to the math questions to eliminate possibilities.

At the beginning of class, learners will hear a short story to preface the mystery they will be solving for the day. Then, it is time for our math detectives to get to work! Who ate Ginny the Gingerbread Man's gingerbread house? Where are they hiding now and why would they want to do such a thing? Learners will take turns answering addition and subtraction problems to help solve the mystery. Then, if we have additional time left, there will also be more math problems to help discover where the culprit is hiding. Learners will first solve the math questions, and then they will look for their answers in the boxes on the screen and eliminate the boxes with a matching answer. After answering all questions, only one box and image will remain (that box will contain a number that didn't match any of the answers to the questions) and that image is the solution to our mystery! At the end of class, learners will get to share their ideas about WHY they think the culprit did what they did. There are no wrong answers to this question. I love for the learners to share their thoughts with everyone!!

Please have your learner bring a pencil and sheet of paper OR a dry erase board and marker to class. There will not be anything to print off for this class. I will have all questions and the elimination process on the shared screen.

I look forward to meeting your learner in class! Now, let's have FUN learning math!! See you in the classroom! :)
