Each learner progress is assessed through individual work. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace. We will be holding discussions and writing summaries of the novel.Class Experience

As students read 1984 by George Orwell they will learn the characters, plot, and hidden themes of the book as well as an in-depth analysis of the plot and the parallels to Joseph Stalin's Soviet Russia. Students will master this commonly required curriculum through discussions, character charts, and questions. We will also be playing some learning games as we study this classic novel. I love George Orwell! Week 1- I will have short lecture presentation over the background of the Russian Revolution and the author's background. We will read some of the first chapter together. -Finish reading chapters 1-11 for next week. Week 2: A study of George Orwell and his influences. Photo study of the major characters involved in the book. This will include a character chart and a discussion over the main characters, secondary characters, and unseen characters. -Read chapter 11-17 for next week. Week 3: Discuss the importance of the characters and the theme up to this point. End with Games! -Read chapters 18-23 for next week Week 4: Finish character chart. Discuss the realities of totalitarianism. Comparisons to Brave New World. Play Kahoot for 1984 Learners will be expected to read sections of the book independently. A minimum of an eighth grade reading level is helpful.
Learning Goals
Learners will learn about themes, characterization, satire, and plot. They will also have an understanding of the historical importance of the Russian Revolution and civics. Learners will also learn about the author and the relationship between his life and the novel. The sensitive topic of communism will be discussed to help learners understand the realities of totalitarianism. I will also be teaching the background information of the Russian Revolution at the beginning of the class to allow the learners to understand how the animal characters represent their real life counterparts.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This book uses satire to make a political point about totalitarianism and communism. Some of the characters in the story act in a violent way to each other. Some of the characters talk about adult themed topics.
