12-Week Reading Intervention (Level 1)
In this 12-week live course, students will meet with a reading interventionist twice per week to improve reading and phonics skills.

1 hour per week. One optional game to play with a grown up and one reading passage will be provided each week as homework. Two short phonemic awareness videos will be provided each week as practice.Assessment

Beginner Level
In this class, we will use a combination of various "science of reading" based programs to teach phonics skills that will help students decode and sound out words. Students will get practice reading, spelling, and manipulating words and sounds so that they can become more confident readers! Programs we use to build our class include: UFLI foundations Orton Gillingham Secret Stories Teacher-created resources Students in this course will spend time mastering the following skills: Short vowel sounds (review only) Digraphs (ch, th, sh, wh, etc.) FLSZ rule (as in the words ball, loss, buzz, etc.) FLSZ word families with irregularities (-all, -oll, -ull) -ng and -nk ending sounds Class format: Tuesday- 30 minute live session introducing skill Wednesday- On your own assignment/ video practice for phonemic awareness Thursday- 30 minute live session to practice reading passage with the teacher Friday/ weekend- Read passage and practice on your own with a grown up at home, video practice for phonemic awareness
Learning Goals
Students will be able to read short (one syllable) words that include short vowel sounds a, e, i, o, and u.
Students will be able to read words ending in -all, -oll, -ull AND can spell words ending in F, L, S, and Z

Other Details
Learning Needs
This class provides explicit phonics instruction, which can be very helpful for students who struggle with Dyslexia or have other special learning needs. This class incorporates parts of Orton-Gillingham, UFLI phonics, Heggerty, and more.
Pre-Requisites
Students should already have basic knowledge of all letter names/ sounds. Students should have been exposed to CVC words and should be familiar with how to blend sounds together, even if they are not proficient in it yet.
Supply List
Magnetic letters will be helpful, however, a printable version is also available to print/ cut! Students will also need a whiteboard or a paper/ plastic page protector and a whiteboard marker.
