Beginner Level
It can be scary to find out your child is behind in reading, especially if you don't know how to help. If it's already hard for them, will tutoring be stressful? I've tutored dozens of children in phonics and reading, and I can assure you, cracking that secret code can be fun! Our first session will consist of an informal assessment and short chat or perhaps a game of Would You Rather to help us get to know each other. After that, the fun begins! I use a wonderful program called Reading Simplified to teach reading to kids who fall anywhere between learning letter sounds and learning to decode multi-syllable words. This isn't a curriculum, it's a method. Each lesson is customized for your child. I'm a patient tutor with the highest regard for children and the hard work they do every school day, learning things we now take for granted. I've seen how exciting it is for them when the light bulb goes off and they understand how to decode a certain type of word! It comes from a combination of their hard work and a tutor who recognizes exactly where they are having trouble and fine tuning the lesson to help them master that one specific bit of decoding - and then repeating that process whenever they reach a roadblock. I would love to meet your child! I promise to create a safe place where your child is treated with kindness, respect, and patience - with a bunch of joy sprinkled throughout.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to decode words using systematic, explicit phonics instruction. They will also learn high-frequency words. These are words that are so commonly used that they are taught separately. Some do not follow phonics rules (they are sometimes called "heart words"), and those will be taught with clear explanations as to how the word works.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I’m Janet Beatrice. I’ve been working with children from ages 6 months to 15 years in various capacities for over 20 years. It wasn’t until I started working as a one-on-one reading tutor for children who were struggling to learn to read that I found my true calling.
In 1999, I completed training to become a registered Music Together facilitator. I planned and led fun, developmentally appropriate early childhood music & movement classes for infants through kindergarteners. I also created a fun, lively curriculum for my church’s K-1 Sunday school class. In February of 2019, I began tutoring Chinese children in English as a second language through VIPKid. These were one-on-one classes with children aged 4 to 12. I continued to tutor these wonderful children almost every weekday morning until November 2021. Once I started tutoring kids who are struggling to learn to read, one first grader gave me the best testimonial I’ve gotten yet: “You’re the best teacher in the universe!” I like to believe this is completely accurate, but I suspect he was biased. 😉
As you can see, I’ve made a point of working with children and youth. Why? Because I really like young people and I think that they are often underestimated and even disrespected. In my classes, my top priority is creating safe places where students are treated with kindness, respect, and patience.
