Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Class Experience
This class will focus on the specific English knowledge and skills required by the individual student, covering the reading and / or writing elements of the curriculum.

In reading, the skills covered can include comprehension and inference based activities. Phonic decoding and reading of sight words can also be taught if required.

For writing, the areas of focus can include spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as text structure and composition. Joined handwriting can also be taught.

The class will consist of fully interactive 1:1 teaching. The learner will need to take full part, asking and answering questions during the session. Teaching methods may include slides and games, as appropriate to the age and stage of the learner. Within each session learners may complete work independently or produce work collaboratively with the tutor. The approach taken will depend on the particular task, the confidence and the skill level of the student.

Additional independent practise work (based on the focus of the taught session) will be available for the learner to complete prior to the next session and will be reviewed at the start of the next session.

In each 40 min session, the time will be allocated as follows:
10 min - reviewing the previous homework submitted by the student and addressing any areas of concern
25 min - direct interactive teaching of the new topic
5 min - explanantion of and instructions for the homework set.

Please note these approximate timings may change, according to the needs of the student.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Emily Selfe.

I have taught hundreds of children between the ages of 4 and 11 in UK primary schools over the last 15 years and I'm now super excited to teach here on Outschool!

I'm very experienced in the UK curriculum and my classes will cover essential skills in maths and English for children in the primary age range. I offer scheduled group classes and I'm also available for 1:1 tutoring, either as a one-off or on an ongoing basis. I'd love to hear from you if this is something you're interested in. I can be flexible in my availability, so please do contact me if the time you'd like doesn't appear in my listings.

I also love crafts and baking. I firmly believe that the skills, resilience and creativity needed for those kinds of practical activities are massively important for children as they grow and develop, so I’m delighted to be able to offer classes in those as well.

I previously worked in a fabric, haberdashery and craft shop, where I learnt about so many different skills, techniques and crafts. I enjoy sewing, including dressmaking and embroidery. I also like to knit, especially to create winter accessories like hats as well as fun Christmas decorations. Paper crafts are another of my interests and I enjoy making small decorative items as well as functional ones.

I ran an after school cooking club for three years, with children aged 7 – 10. I taught skills like how to use knives safely, weighing and measuring ingredients, food hygiene and how to follow a recipe, as well as the specific techniques called for in each recipe. I have a City & Guilds Level 2 certificate in Food Safety and Hygiene, which I renew every 3 years. I grew up with an amazing home-baking Granny and I’ve enjoyed carrying this on with my own children, and passing it on to the children I work with!

In my spare time I volunteer as a leader for Girl Guides and Rainbows, so of course I bring a little of those values and skills into my classroom too. In this role, I have worked with girls aged 5-7 and 10-16 over the last 20 years. We’ve done so much together, including crafts, cooking and camping – not forgetting the adventurous activities like abseiling, fire lighting and kayaking!

I hope to see you in class soon and would love to be part your Outschool journey.
