It is my goal to create confident, flexible, and strategic readers through lessons that are targeted to meet individual student learning goals. I will conduct assessments to determine your child's instructional level and allow me to create lessons designed for their individual areas of growth. Each 30 minute lesson will focus on a combination of the following reading and language skills. Phonological and Phonemic Awareness- Units of sounds we hear in words Phonics and Word Study- Letter combinations we use to read and write words Decoding- Using strategies to read unfamiliar words Orthographic Mapping of High Frequency Words- Process of learning new words to encourage storage in long term memory Fluency- Reading with expression and attention to punctuation Comprehension- Understanding what is read and engagement with text Writing- Use of complete and detailed sentences to express ideas If you would like to request a different time, please let me know.
Learning Goals
Students will improve accuracy, fluency, and comprehension while reading and work on individual goals. Students will build confidence as a reader and find books they enjoy.

Sources
I will provide a subscription to an online library with texts on their independent and instructional reading level as well as a link to a virtual classroom where your child will have access to texts read in class to reread for additional practice.

Hello! My name is Emily and I am excited to teach your child. I had the pleasure of teaching first grade as a classroom teacher for five years before moving abroad to teach English as an Additional Language and Reading Support for two years in Santiago, Chile. After returning to Virginia, I taught kindergarten online and English as a Second Language to students in K-2 in public school.
I earned a bachelor's of science in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Elementary and Middle School Education from Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Additionally, I earned a Master's of Education in Reading from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. I currently hold a Virginia Collegiate Professional teaching license with endorsements to teach Elementary pk-6, Middle School English 6-8, Reading Specialist K-12, and English as an Additional Language K-12. I recently completed a 30 hour comprehensive Orton-Gillingham course through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education.
