US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is for younger learners who are struggling to write, either because they have difficulty with imaginative ideas, (the why of writing), or due to the need for extended writing time, teacher patience and accommodations. This course does not teach writing mechanics, such as how to write on the line, how to hold a pencil, or letter formation. Please do an Outschool search with that specific criterion if you need a 1:1 tutor that focuses on occupational therapy (how to teach a child to physically write). This class is best suited for fun, creative writing with structured guidance and patience. ~~~~~ Welcome! This class is great for first grade students and learners who are transitioning to and from first grade. For example ~ leaving kindergarten and entering first grade or leaving first grade and going to second grade. What your child should be able to do: Write on the line. Form uppercase and lowercase letters. Click on the chat box to receive private teacher writing support during the class session. In this class students will respond to question prompts to create sentences by drawing at least 3 pictures to showcase a beginning, middle and end. After drawing, students will engage in a group discussion to explain their picture. I type, verbatim what they say in the chat box or through share screen (mostly privately via chat). Students are then encouraged to take their pencil and copy their sentences, as written in the chat box. If there is a need for grammar correction, for example proper verb tense this is discussed by having them recast the sentence using the correct grammar. For example, if the student dictates “I run yesterday” the student will correctly repeat and write “I ran yesterday.” If this is a reoccurring error time is spent as a teachable moment. This class sticks to the syllabus, as posted. ~~~~~ What parents need to do: 1. Remove the blur background on your Zoom so your child can show their writing work and receive teacher feedback and corrections. Throughout the class session I will ask students to hold up their notebook/paper to provide needed corrections. The blur background needs to be off so students can receive the needed writing help. 2. Please provide support by entering on time 3. Please supply your learner with a notebook and pencil before class. 4. Please avoid side conversations during the class session, if possible. All students will be guided and encouraged based on their personal writing ability. Learners will receive support through visual aids and examples to help them understand how the key parts of speech go together in writing (noun, verb, adjective). They will also be given teacher support for spelling/grammar checks through the Zoom chat box and whiteboard features. Please set your child up to access the chat box to support their time in this class. Thank you. ~~~~~ The overall target goal for your learner is to guide them to confidently write for an extended period of time. New content will be taught each week. Previous attendees will be reminded of the content already taught and provided with help to independently write. Newcomers will be supported with teacher examples and regularly receive attention to ensure understanding and comfort. Please ensure your learner has a lined notebook for this class and bring the same notebook for each class. Please feel free to message me with any questions. Thank you!

I grew up and went to school in the New York City area but now live in a small farming community in rural Midwest, USA. I enjoy working with and meeting people from both urban and rural settings and readily adjust to meet their learning needs in a culturally responsive way. I also volunteer at a prison and remain adaptable to ensure a supportive and safe learning environment.
I have degrees in the area of Corporate Communication, Education, and Second Language Acquisition. My teaching background is varied as a former 3rd Grade Classroom Teacher at a French immersion school, Orton-Gillingham trained structured reading teacher and as an Adjunct College Instructor.
I believe instructional data is crucial to improve learning outcomes. I constantly assess student comprehension during sessions in a relaxed and encouraging learning environment.
I love traveling and learning more about different cultures. This helps me to support all learners in my classroom. So far, I have visited Estonia, Russia, Kinshasa (Congo), London, Togo, South Korea, Latvia and a few other places. I also studied abroad in France. With each travel experience my respect for people and their culture simply deepens. I look forward to meeting you too!
