Class Experience
Welcome to music lessons! As a board-certified music therapist, I believe all individuals are capable of learning and enjoying music in their own way. 1:1 lessons move at the pace of the learner and I am trained in adapting to the specific needs of each student. Each lesson brings its own dynamic differences...as does each student! I thoroughly appreciate the uniqueness of both. Private, 1:1, weekly lessons are available on the piano, violin, guitar, and ukulele. Lessons can include: - basic music theory and notation comprehension - appropriate posture, positioning, and technique - rhythm and counting - instrument care, maintenance, and anatomy It's so much more than music - patience, hard work, discipline, communication, focus, tenacity, confidence, self-expression...are complimentary skills that we improve with each lesson. I believe in you! Ready to begin? Perfect - this is a wonderful place to start. Prior musical experience is not required, however, it is necessary that students have their own individual instrument to practice skills learned in lessons. I can advise on rental or purchase of an instrument or curriculum if you need guidance. IMPORTANT NOTES: - My goal is for your child to be successful on their instrument and to enjoy lessons. Music lessons should not be a form of time occupation, busy work, or punishment...rather a form of enrichment, joy, fulfillment, and accomplishment. - No refunds for absences. My schedule holds a dedicated spot for your child each week; in the event that it is not utilized, your payment is a reservation of time that can not otherwise be utilized, scheduled, or transferred for another student. - Throughout the course of lessons and due to the nature of virtual lessons, students may need the assistance of their parent or guardian. I will leave notes indicating these assignments in the classroom. If your student is not at the appropriate age for a specific instrument and will not be making gains within a reasonable amount of time, I will indicate this in my teacher notes. - As carefully as I attempt to craft all assignments and repertoire into a perfectly timed lesson, lessons may end a few minutes early or run a few minutes over the allotted time frame. I will not start teaching complex or technical aspects in a lesson with less than five minutes; we will begin with these concepts at the next scheduled meeting. - Families with multiple children enrolled must have each child individually enrolled. - Adults (including parents and caregivers) are not permitted to be on screen per Outschool policy. - Music courses are not meant to be a form of busy work, time occupancy, or punishment. Students should be able to demonstrate an interest and willingness to learn and succeed in class. In the event that this is not observed, students may be subject to withdrawal at my discretion. Parent or guardian will be contacted in this event. - Although I am a board-certified music therapist, it is against Outschool policy to provide such services on this platform. See you in the classroom!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been practicing music therapy for over six years and am a nationally board-certified music therapist accredited by the Certification Board of Music Therapists. I received my bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from Drury University and was president of my local student organization. After college, I completed a six-month intensive internship where I provided care for individuals age birth through hospice care. In the past, I have supervised college-level students in their practicum completion period. Currently, I own and operate a private practice providing services to individuals of all ages and ability levels. I am a classically trained violinist as my primary instrument, have played piano for over twenty years, and have passed music therapy competencies on all instruments that I teach.
I am experienced in working with the following populations: developmental disabilities, early childhood intervention, speech and language deficits, traumatic brain injury, physical and neurological rehabilitation, emotional and mood disturbances, foster and residential care youth and adolescents, assisted living, memory care, dementia care, and hospice.
