Homework
Anything not finished in class, can be done for Homework.Class Experience
In this class, students will learn the basics of illustration with Autodesk Sketchbook. 📢 This class is for any still skill level. No previous knowledge of Sketchbook is required. If you love to draw, color black and white photos, or create goofy photo-collage scenes, and you love the Sketchbook app., I'll teach you how to draw fun art scenes, add fun blending effects, and utilize Sketchbook's amazing tools to create fun illustrations that you've been dreaming of. 💡 If Sketchbook is installed on the same computer as Zoom, it would be easier for students to show what they are doing, if they need help. They could also be able to show their classmates what they created. ITINERARY: What the students would be doing during each meeting... (These 1:1 class sessions will be learner-directed, so the direction will this class often varies depending on the student.) Week 1: How to Start a Sketchbook Project (For students who never used Sketchbook before) ✔ The first week will start with about 5 minutes of introductions for with the new student in the class. ✔ Students are instructed on how to start a Sketchbook project. ✔ Students are introduced to the different tools on Sketchbook. * If the student shares their screen while using Sketchbook, the instructor can give assistance with annotation. * Here are some of the Sketchbook tools this project would introduce: Layer Introduction, Brush & Pen Tools, Paint Bucket Tool, Eraser Tools, Bucket Tool, etc. Week 2: Working with Sketchbook's Layers ✔ Students are introduced to "layers". * The learning objective of this project is to enable students to understand the concept of layers. They learn to understand this visually by creating a face (or it could be a plate of food). After demonstrating how to make layers students can then create additional layers independently. * If there is extra time, student will be introduced to the blending tool to add fun textures to your illustrations. Week 3: Coloring Black and White Photos The learner will be given old black and white photos to color (or they can open up their own). Students will be playing around with layers some more by coloring black & white photos. These Sketchbook concepts are introduced in this project: Layer Effects, Merging Layers, Duplicating Layers, Opacity, Marquee Tool, Blending Tool Other weeks... As these 1:1 class sessions are learner-directs, there are other possible Sketchbook themed ideas that will be done in these classes with the student: ✔ Making Goofy Photo Scenes. (Example: Taking a cat's head and put it on a person's body. Then add sunglass and a hat!) ✔ Learning how to do Rotoscoping and turning video frames into animated cartoons. Or add special effects. This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded. This class will be presented via cameras from the instructor. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask questions during instruction. No writing or independent reading is necessary. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to demonstrate understanding of the basics of digital drawing development through designing a picture and learning various drawing techniques.

Hi, my name is Raymond Mullikin. 👋
I am a professional cartoonist and credentialed teacher from San Luis Obispo, California.
I teach classes in Cartooning, Comic Book Printing and Publishing, 2D Cartoon Animation, Claymation/Stop Motion, Toy Figure Design, Video Game and App Coding, Creative Writing, etc.
I am also a professional illustrator/writer and Creative Director for Raytoons Comics. The Raytoons website is at Raytoons.Net. I have published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers, and e-cards. I am an app designer who have designed my own games and software for schools and Appstores. I have also done past work in animation, creating animated film shorts for film festivals around the world.
I graduated from the University of Laverne with a Teaching Credential (2012) and a BA in Liberal Studies (2009). I also have certifications in Early Childhood Education, Technology and 2D Design. I've worked in education for 20+ years (including a few years in Special Ed) and have been doing contract teaching since 2009. I teach art and technology to children and adults of all ages.
How students approach a learning task can strongly influence the quality of their learning outcomes. For me, my approach is often very hands on (kinesthetic) with a lot of visual examples... That's how I've learned things, with a more creative approach. I have a lot of this in my instruction, with a mix of direct and interactive instruction with lots of Experiential Learning hands on!
It is also important to me to get feedback from both children and parents... Some kids have some very clever ideas! And, in teaching, there is always room for expansion of ideas and improving oneself.
I love drawing, comics, writing, creating my own games, and reading. Pretty much everything that I teach I enjoy and do professionally. I also enjoy teaching and thank all the parents and students willing to give me a try! 😃
