Class Experience

Welcome to 1:1 Poetry Crafts: Reading, Writing, & Crafting for Young Poets!

Do you love arts & crafts, reading, and creative writing? In this private 1:1 class, we will read stories that will inspire crafts created with our own special words, drawings, paintings, and cutouts! Let's explore nature, friendship, animals, space, foods, and more! What story will your craft tell?

Being playful with language is a wonderful way to help students organically develop their budding poetic talents. We will discuss the day’s theme, read poems to inspire our imaginations, reflect upon our readings, and set our thoughts free through mindful free writing. Students will then create a craft using their own special, creative words!

This class will provide a warm and relaxing environment for young readers and writers who are comfortable reading short stories. Discussion and reading aloud will be gently encouraged.

**Important Notes:
1. Stories go beyond sight words, so please ensure that your learner will be comfortable reading, listening, and understanding stories that are more advanced.
2. This class will not focus on the technicality of poetry or creative writing, but rather nurturing a natural enjoyment for reading and self-expression through words and art.
3. Learners will be guided through the art craft step by step, but drawings and words will be left to each learner’s imagination and creative freedom. Incomplete crafts may be completed after class and shared to the teacher or classroom.

See you in class!

Master's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from New York University
Welcome to Ms. Ashley’s Words & Sounds Classroom!

I love words & sounds! I studied Creative & Professional Writing, Children's Literature, and received a Masters in Music Theory & Composition from New York University.

I have taught music, creative writing, and English for 6+ years and have worked with children with language difficulties.

During my time at NYU, I began researching and developing music technology that promotes children’s sound cognition skills and combats difficulties in reading and speaking with the aid of sounds and music.

While a major goal in music studies and language studies is gaining technical understanding and accuracy, just as important is overcoming fear of self-expression and establishing curiosity. I wish to help your learners not only comprehend these topics, but also build confidence in their own creative voices!

Words & sounds are beautiful and exciting! Let’s explore them in class soon!
