Class Experience

As students begin reading books at a young age, teaching them how to communicate their thoughts and ideas about the books they read is an important part of reading comprehension and expression. This class will help students put their thoughts on a text into written form. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a private lesson.

This class is suited for students ages 11 - 13 years old.

In this class, students will:

• Practice brainstorming to create a book review and book recommendation
• Understand the difference between a book report and a book review
• Learn how to create an organized list of ideas & elements that make a compelling book review
• Share and discuss their thoughts and opinions about books they have read
• Engage critically with a text by analyzing and evaluating it

Students will identify the differences and similarities between a book report and a book review. We will also discuss the various elements they can include in their reviews to make it captivating for other readers. They will compare examples of written reviews, while also discussing what makes a strong review and things that can make a review weak in comparison. We will be thinking aloud as we brainstorm to create an organized list of ideas. This will include stating the plot, characters, setting, and opinion of the story. Together, we will make connections to other books, and share what they liked and why they enjoyed their selected titles.

I encourage students to take notes in order to write their own reviews after class. Optional: They can then upload (or type) their final draft in the classroom to obtain feedback. Students can also message me directly through Outschool communication to obtain feedback on their final review.

Greetings! I'm Cynthia, and I'm thrilled to share my background and passion for teaching.

I bring a solid foundation to my ten years of experience. During this time, I've had the joy of teaching children in English Language Arts and serving as an ESL tutor. I’ve also had the privilege of contributing to my library district as a youth program specialist where I created programming focused on early literacy and elementary education.

Discovering that fostering curiosity is the key to effective learning, I am committed to instilling a love for learning in every student, particularly in the critical stages of early literacy and elementary education. My teaching approach centers around creating a positive, nurturing, and inclusive environment.

I specialize in crafting classes that empower children to develop the skills needed for independent thinking while actively engaging in the learning process. I am excited to be part of your child's educational journey!

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a private lesson. Looking forward to connecting with you and your child!
