I'll give them positive feedback to build confidence and enthusiasm for writing and I'll give them skill areas to develop and ways they can work on these skills.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 10
I help ESL students with whatever skills they need to learn. I like to teach them in a fun way, using storytelling to engage them. Many students like to prepare for the Asian Scholastic Storytelling Contest Awards. I help them learn how to tell a story a powerful, clear manner. We'll work on pronunciation, intonation, timing, and memorization. If they are old enough to write, first, they'll write it down so that they can practice it. Last year, one of my students won a Scholastic Writing Award in the United States and I can help your child do well too. I'm a published novelist. My novels have won awards and I regular go to schools around the country. I've told hundreds of stories in front of huge crowds. I tell memorized stories at every event. The skills for verbal storytelling and written storytelling are very similar. For ESL students, we also need to work on intonation and pronunciation. Below are examples of specific skills, but basically I help the student with whatever they need. Pronunciation and intonation Grammar: capitals, periods, paragraphing, commas, punctuation Literary devices: metaphors, similes, alliteration, personification, imagery Multi-sensory language: using all of the senses Humor Suspense Writing Organization: creating a story with a beginning, middle, and end Outside of the class, they will also receive my help. They can send me work between our sessions and I'll send them feedback about what to improve and what I love.

I run a successful afterschool writing program in the Los Angeles Unified School District. One of the schools where I currently teach, La Ballona Elementary, is a bilingual school with many ESL learners. Besides teaching, I've also worked as a radio and TV journalist.
