Writing the college essay can be intimidating - it feels like the stake are high, and often personal essays aren't a genre that students have much experience with. I'm here to help! I believe that every student is capable of writing a strong personal statement that showcases their unique gifts and abilities. No matter where you are in the process, I can support you. We'll focus on topics such as brainstorming activities, selecting a strong topic, effective outlining and planning, drafting using writing techniques that showcase your voice and help your writing stand out, and revision focused on your goals. At the end of the process you'll have an essay that you are confident about! My teaching style is focused on you: as we work through different writing activities together, I will adapt to your strengths and needs. Most sessions will be a mix of structured activities and individual feedback or coaching. I've worked with students on their college essays 1:1 for 15+ years as well as teaching workshops on the college essay process. My students have gone on to be accepted to highly selective schools like Harvard, Yale, UPenn, Georgetown, and Howard as well as a wide variety of other schools and scholarship programs.

Hi everyone! I am a patient, supportive classroom teacher and writing tutor with 20 years of experience teaching English at private schools in Philadelphia and on the Main Line. I have worked with diverse students in grades 7-12.
I believe strong communication skills are key to success in life, both academically and interpersonally. Telling our stories helps us know ourselves and connect with others. Hearing others' stories helps us understand and empathize with experiences beyond our own.
My goal is to help students succeed by offering classes in writing, college essays, literature, and study skills. I'm also available to work with students 1:1 to hone their skills! My classes are inquiry-driven and discussion-based. Even when I'm delivering information, I like to provide lots of opportunities for students to respond, practice, and engage. My core belief is that students are the ones doing the intellectual work in class - my job is to create opportunities for them to explore, analyze, and shape their own understandings.
I'm National Board Certified in English for Adolescents/Young Adults. I have a masters degree in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury as well as a second masters in Teaching Secondary English. I'm also a College Board-approved AP English Literature teacher.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy travel, hiking, and gardening!
