1:1 Book Study (Student Book Choice)
Does your child have a book to read for an assignment ? Would you like your child to focus beyond the story to the characters, vocabulary, and the writer's literary devices? This course is personalized for each student.
Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Does your learner have a reading requirement for a specific novel? Are you wanting to make sure that your learner has the support that they need to read a "classic" novel? In this ongoing class, we meet one on one to discuss a book chosen by your learner (or assigned). Together we will set a schedule of the number of pages and purpose for reading between classes. This class allows you to choose the pace that best fits your learner. We can meet once a week or more. We can also check in...
- Read the learner's selected or assigned book for comprehension.
- Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
- Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems, historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place.).
I have two masters in education, and teaching degrees in both elementary and early childhood education. I have an additional certification in teaching reading. I am highly qualified as both a history and science teacher. I have taught in a public school for over 25 years. I was awarded a Reading Teacher of the Year award twice during my career.

Learner choice book, notebook or handouts
I will occassionally use Nearpod to create quizzes for students based on their novel. Quizzes may be about the characters, plot, vocabulary, and literary devices.
The learner will request a book based on their interest or assignment.
