Class Experience

** SLOTS FOR THIS CLASS ARE CREATED ON REQUEST. Please either self-book or message me with some suitable times and your time zone, and I will see if I can offer a mutually agreeable time slot**

In this class, learners will work on their Public Speaking skills and techniques with a different published poem (or they can focus on developing one key poem for example for a Public Speaking competition/Poetry recital/festival) and a specific focus each week. This can be great practice to develop, get better and grow in confidence, or, we can work on a competition entry, or as we use published pieces, learners can collect together 5 really strong poems they can use for any competitions, festivals, recitals, or performances (or to borrow ideas from to create their own).

Each week we will take a different 'P' focus to work on our public speaking presentation:
Class 1- We explore our use of Pace and learn the power of it on our audience,
Class 2- We explore our use of Pitch and learn how it can help communicate emotion,
Class 3- We will look at the power of Pauses and how the greatest speakers use silence as cleverly as words,
Class 4- We will explore emphasis and making bits sound more important,
Class 5- We will explore punch and how important it is to break patterns in our speech,

We will either work on a poem of the learner's choice or work on provided published poems (these are all in the public domain so perfect for competitions, recitals or festivals). We can also work on non-verbal aspects like facial expressions, body language, posture and audience awareness.

Learners will need to be able to competently read a poem of up to 5 verses on their own in order to take this class, but Mrs. T can assist with any mispronunciation, checking sense, and difficult words.

You can take this class if you are an absolute beginner and fancy giving public speaking/poetry recital a try or if you are preparing for a speech and drama or public speaking competition, festival, recital or performance. Learners can take this class more than once too.

'Wonderful teacher really knowledgeable :) My daughter has had a few private lessons for her up-and-coming speech and drama festival and all have been a huge help.'

'I would like to thank you with an update, previously shy D achieved a place in the semi-finals for his year 6 speech competition! I saw him practicing with hand gestures, voice tone, and pauses that you taught him over his classes last term break. I am so pleased to see him breaking out of his shell and stepping up. Thank you'

*ALSO AVAILABLE AS A 10 WEEK BLOCK OF HOUR CLASSES OR WEEKLY 40 MINUTE CLASSES. PLEASE MESSAGE ME FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE (Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, some TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. Previous learners have achieved several A+ grades in a speech and drama festival, top grades in a session of 20, and a Bronze overall against native speakers, second round of a national competition. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
