Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
** SLOTS FOR THIS CLASS ARE CREATED ON REQUEST. Please either self-book or message me with some suitable times and your time zone, and I will see if I can offer a mutually agreeable time slot**

In this class, learners will work on their Public Speaking skills and techniques with a different published speech (or they focus on developing one key speech) and a specific focus each week. This can be great practice to develop, get better and grow in confidence, or, we can work on a competition entry, or as we use published pieces, learners can collect together 5 really strong speeches they can use for competitions, festivals, or performances (or to borrow ideas from to create their own).

Each week we will take a different 'P' focus to work on our public speaking presentation:
Class 1- We explore modulating our use of Pace and learn the power of it on our audience,
Class 2- We explore modulating our use of Pitch and learn how it can help communicate emotion,
Class 3- We will look at the power of Pauses and how the greatest speakers use silence as cleverly as words,
Class 4- We will explore Passion and emphasis to really capture the true feeling of a speech,
Class 5- We will explore Punch and how important it is to break patterns in our speech,

We can either work on a speech of the learner's choice (for example for a competition or school assignment) or work with speeches from either 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens', 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens II,' or 'Monologues for Teens', or Monologues for Teens II' by Mike Kimmel. I highly recommend learners purchase their own copy of one of these books as there are lots more speeches that they can use to build their skills after our class, but I can also supply copies of the speech we are using in pdf form or pasted into the chat box if you need me to. Learners are welcome to choose which book they would like to work from depending on their age and any prior knowledge/experience of these books.

Learners will need to be able to competently read a minute's worth of text in order to take this class. They can take it at a variety of levels of public speaking skills though, as Mrs. T will use her years of experience to assess and adapt as necessary during each class, and from week to week.

You can take this class if you are an absolute beginner and fancy giving public speaking a try or if you are preparing for a speech and drama or public speaking competition, festival, or performance.

Learners can take this class more than once too, as the books contain 60-100 monologues each. Learners that take this class more than once could also benefit from a special Q and A session being offered by the author himself (depending on availability).

All materials are used with the permission and support of the author Mike Kimmel and when learners purchase their own copy of the book they can have a selection polished and ready for any future speeches, competitions, festivals, or performances.

Mike Kimmel is an experienced actor, public speaker, playwright, teacher, and audition coach. I found his speeches were often popping up as auditions and speeches which learners wanted to prepare for in my 1:1 classes, so I purchased my own copies, and I have found that learners of all ages really love them. They have also successfully gotten some of them places from auditions and to win, or through to the next round in public speaking competitions etc too.

As his speeches contain words of empowerment, motivation, confidence building, and different ways to approach challenging situations learners will gain an added extra insight into how to approach life too.

'Wonderful teacher really knowledgeable :) My daughter has had a few private lessons for her up and coming speech and drama festival and all have been a huge help.'

'I would like to thank you with an update, previously shy D achieved a place in the semi-finals for his year 6 speech competition! I saw him practicing with hand gestures, voice tone, and pauses that you taught him over his classes last term break. I am so pleased to see him breaking out of his shell and stepping up. Thank you'
Learning Goals
Learners will develop their Public Speaking skills by looking at their use of pace, pitch, pauses, passion, and punch. They will also be able to prepare and polish speeches for any future competitions, festivals, or performances.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 18 years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE (Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, some TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. Previous learners have achieved several A+ grades in a speech and drama festival, top grades in a session of 20, and a Bronze overall against native speakers, second round of a national competition. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
