Class Experience

With 2 classes a week, every week, for as long as you would like to continue, learners get the opportunity for highly focused, personalized learning, aimed at developing their Public Speaking confidence, or addressing a specific area (or areas) of concern, such as a monotone voice, speaking too fast, upspeaking/uptalking, needing to speak more fluently, one-word conversation responses, unable to express their ideas clearly, needing to develop their non-verbal areas etc.

Each class will begin with some focused vocal and mouth warm-ups and exercises. Which learners can learn and use in the future (some are specifically tailored to an area of concern such as upspeaking for example).

Each class will be personalized to your learner and the issue (or issues) they need to work on, but to give you an idea of a possible class structure: In our first class each week we will look at a published speech by Mike Kimmel. With constant on-the-spot constructive feedback we will bring this to presentation standard, (building confidence and using a specific Public Speaking technique, or as we progress, techniques). Then we will move on to working together to create our own version of this speech, in the same style, using sentence prompts to build confidence and help generate ideas.

We will then apply the same Public Speaking technique to our new speech in our second class, bringing in relevant non-verbal elements such as posture, body language, facial expressions etc, to create the most confident and professional presentation of it.

I can also throw in some icebreaker questions (building verbal thinking on our feet skills, encouraging the extending of conversations from one-word answers, and looking at how to structure our responses better), and definitions of nonsense words (working on expressing our ideas in a clear, confident, engaging way).

Week 1= We will work on developing our use of pitch/vocal color in our Public Speaking (to avoid sounding monotone/boring and sound more engaging, warm, serious, or, interested).

Week 2= We will work on developing our use of pace in our Public Speaking (to avoid speaking too fast and improve expression, fluency, and clarity).

Week 3= We will work on developing our use of pauses in our Public Speaking (to help our speaking make sense, to make our point, or draw attention to ideas).

Week 4= We will work on developing our use of emphasis in our Public Speaking (to express our ideas clearer, establish importance, and give our speeches impact).

As this is a 1:1 personlised curriculum class, please feel free to suggest other areas you would like to cover. Learners can take this class as an absolute beginner and fancy giving public speaking a try, or if they are preparing for a speech and drama or public speaking competition, festival, or performance or just to work on improvements.

We can work on a speech from example either 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens', 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens II,' or 'Monologues for Teens', or Monologues for Teens II' by Mike Kimmel. I highly recommend learners purchase their own copy of one of these books as there are lots more speeches that they can use to build their skills between classes, but I can also supply copies of the speech in pdf form or pasted into the chat box if you need me to. Learners are welcome to choose which book they would like to work from depending on their age and any prior knowledge/experience of these books. We can also work with other sources such as competition pieces.

All speech materials are used with the permission and support of the author Mike Kimmel and when learners purchase their own copy of the book they can have a selection of polished speeches ready for any future speeches, competitions, festivals, or performances.

Mike Kimmel is an experienced actor, public speaker, playwright, teacher, and audition coach. I found his speeches were often popping up as auditions and speeches which learners wanted to prepare for in my 1:1 classes, so I purchased my own copies, and I have found that learners of all ages really love them. They have also successfully achieved places in auditions and to win, or get through to the next round, in public speaking competitions etc too.

As his speeches contain words of empowerment, motivation, confidence building, and different ways to approach challenging situations learners will gain an added extra insight into how to approach life too.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop their Public Speaking skills and confidence by looking at their use of pace, pitch, pauses, passion, and punch. If they have a specific Public Speaking concern this can be addressed week after week too.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching Drama (and Performing Arts, English, Music, and PSHCE (Personal Social Health Education) in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos and have a regular podcast.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best performance, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. Previous learners have achieved several A+ grades in a speech and drama festival, top grades in a session of 20, and a Bronze overall against native speakers, second round of a national competition. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
